This lesson teaches children that God is strong enough to protect the people He loves, even when everyone around them is afraid. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with time for a story, a few verses, a question or two, and an activity.

Big Idea

God is strong, He keeps His promises, and He takes care of His people. When everything around us feels scary, we can trust that He is still in control and still watching over us.

Memory Verse

Zechariah 12:1

A revelation, the LORD’s word concerning Israel. The LORD, who stretches out the heavens, and lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him says…

(WEB)

Have the children stretch their arms wide like the sky, then bring their hands down and press them flat on the floor, like a foundation. Say the words together while you move. Repeat the motion twice so the children can feel that God is the One who made everything.

The Story: Zechariah 12 for Kids

Long ago, God gave a message to a prophet named Zechariah. The message was about the city of Jerusalem and the people of Judah. God said He had made the whole world, from the sky above to the ground below. He also made every person’s spirit. Nothing is too big or too hard for Him.

God told the people that enemies would come to fight against Jerusalem. The city would feel like a heavy stone that nations tried to lift. Many would be hurt by trying to carry it. But God said, “I will protect Jerusalem.” The enemies’ horses and riders would become confused and afraid, and God would be watching over His people.

The leaders of Judah would look at the people of Jerusalem and say, “These people are our strength, because the LORD is our God.” God would make the leaders of Judah strong, like a fire that burns through dry wood. Their enemies would be overcome, and Jerusalem would be lived in again. God even said He would protect the weakest people, so that they would be strong like King David.

Then God promised to pour out a special spirit of kindness and prayer on the people of Jerusalem. They would look to God, the One they had hurt, and they would feel very sad. They would mourn for Him the way a family mourns the loss of a child they love very much. Everyone in the land would grieve, family by family, and God would still be with them through their sadness.

Read It Together

Zechariah 12:2-3

2 “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of reeling to all the surrounding peoples, and it will also be on Judah in the siege against Jerusalem. 3 It will happen in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.

(WEB)

Point out that the city becomes like a heavy stone that hurts people who try to lift it. Ask the children what kinds of things feel heavy to carry, and remind them that God keeps His people safe even when trouble is heavy.

Zechariah 12:8

In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem. He who is feeble among them at that day will be like David, and David’s house will be like God, like the LORD’s angel before them.

(WEB)

Show the children that God says He will defend the people of Jerusalem. Explain that “defend” means to stand in front of someone and keep them safe, the way a good friend stands between you and something scary.

Zechariah 12:10

I will pour on David’s house, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they will look to me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him, as one grieves for his firstborn.

(WEB)

Point out that God gives His people a kind and prayerful spirit. Explain that when we feel sorry for hurting someone, God helps us turn back to Him with a sad and loving heart.

Talk About It

  • What is something that made you feel scared, and how did you feel when you remembered God was with you?
  • Why do you think God wanted the people of Jerusalem to know He was strong?
  • How can you tell that God is protecting you, even when you can’t see Him?
  • What does it look like to stand up for a friend who is being treated unfairly?
  • Why is it good to say sorry to God when we have done something wrong?

Activity Ideas

Paper Shield Craft

You will need paper plates, crayons or markers, tape, and a craft stick or popsicle stick. Have each child draw a picture of something God protects them from, such as fear or the dark, on one side of the plate. Tape the stick to the back so the child can hold it like a shield. Encourage them to talk about what they drew and why God is their protector.

Stone and Shield Game

Gather some soft balls or rolled-up socks to act as stones, and a few cushions or chairs to act as a wall. Divide the children into two teams. One team tries to carry or throw the “stones” over the wall while the other team stands guard. Stop after a few minutes and talk about how God stands guard over His people and keeps them safe.

Take-Home Prayer Jar

You will need a small jar or cup, paper, and a pencil. Ask each child to write one worry on a slip of paper and fold it up. Place the slips in the jar and keep it at home. Encourage the family to pray over the jar each evening, thanking God that He is strong and takes care of His people.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter is a picture of God’s faithfulness to His people in hard times. Zechariah speaks of a future when God will defend Jerusalem, strengthen the weak, and pour out a spirit of grace and mourning that leads people to look again to the One they have pierced. The passage reminds us that God’s power is not limited, and that repentance and grief can be the doorway to renewal.

With children, avoid overstating the timeline or the specific events of the prophecy. Keep the focus on the truths that are clear and comforting: God is strong, He protects His people, and He invites them to turn back to Him with sorrow and love.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that You are strong and You made the whole world. Thank You that You protect us when we feel scared, and that You stand with us when life feels heavy. Help us to trust You every day, and to turn to You with sorry hearts when we do wrong. Keep us safe and close to You. Amen.
