This lesson teaches children that God promises to make His people clean and that He keeps His promises, even when things look hard. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, a memory action, and a simple activity.
Big Idea
God promises to wash away our sin and make us clean, and He always keeps His word to His people.
Memory Verse
Zechariah 13:1
“In that day there will be a spring opened to David’s house and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.

Have the children cup their hands together in front of their chest, then slowly open them wide, like water pouring out. Say the words together as you do the motion. Repeat it three times so the picture of a spring of clean water sticks in their minds.
The Story: Zechariah 13 for Kids
Long ago, God sent a prophet named Zechariah to tell the people of Jerusalem about the future. God had a special promise for them. One day, He would open a spring of water to wash away their sin and their dirty, unclean hearts. The water would be for David’s family and for everyone living in Jerusalem.
God also said He would remove the idols from the land. The people had been bowing down to wooden and stone gods that could not help them. God told them that those false gods would be remembered no more. Their hearts would be turned back to the one true God.
The story then becomes very serious. God spoke about a shepherd who would be struck, and the sheep would scatter. Even the little ones would feel the pain. It was a sad picture, but it showed that God’s plan was bigger than the trouble the people could see.
God also explained that many people would be lost in the hard times, but some would be left behind. God said, “I will bring the third part through the fire and refine them like silver.” Like a metalworker who heats silver to make it pure, God would make His people pure and strong. Then they would call on His name, and He would answer them.
At the very end of the chapter, God says the most beautiful words of all. He says, “It is my people.” And His people answer, “The LORD is my God.” God keeps His promise to be close to His people and to care for them.
Read It Together
Zechariah 13:2
It will come to pass in that day, says the LORD of Armies, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will be remembered no more. I will also cause the prophets and the spirit of impurity to pass out of the land.
(WEB)
Point out that God says He will remove the idols from the land. Ask the children what things in their lives might take God’s place in their hearts, such as toys, games, or screens. Explain that God wants our hearts to belong only to Him.
Zechariah 13:8-9
8 It shall happen that in all the land,” says the LORD, “two parts in it will be cut off and die; but the third will be left in it. 9 I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, ‘It is my people;’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’”
(WEB)
Show the children how God talks about refining silver and gold through the fire. Explain that fire can look scary, but it is used to make something pure and beautiful. God uses hard times to help His people grow closer to Him.
Zechariah 13:9
I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, ‘It is my people;’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’”
(WEB)
Point to the words “It is my people” and “The LORD is my God.” Explain that God calls His people His own, and that we can answer Him with our own words of love and belonging.
Talk About It
- What do you think it means that God will wash away our sin like a spring of clean water?
- Why do you think God wanted the people to stop worshiping idols?
- How do you think someone feels when they are made clean and pure, like silver after it is refined?
- What is one thing you can do this week to show God that He is first in your heart?
- How does it feel to know that God calls you His own?
Activity Ideas
Clean Spring Painting
You will need white paper, blue and brown paint or markers, a cup of water, and a paintbrush. Have each child draw a simple ground shape near the bottom of the paper and a blue stream of water flowing up and across it. Let them dip the brush in the cup and wash over the blue to show clean water washing things clean. Talk about how God’s spring washes sin away.
Refiner’s Fire Freeze Game
Clear a space in your room or classroom. Call out “Sheep!” and have the children walk around like sheep, then call out “Shepherd!” and have them freeze like statues. Each time they freeze, say a line about God making His people pure. End by calling out “It is my people!” and have everyone cheer quietly. This helps children remember the chapter’s main picture of God gathering and keeping His flock.
Silver Reminder Card
Give each child a small piece of paper and a foil star or a piece of silver paper. Have them glue the foil on the paper and write or draw “God makes me clean.” Encourage them to put it on their bedside table or in their school bag. At bedtime or before school, ask them to tell you what the card reminds them of.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Zechariah 13 points to God’s promise to cleanse His people from sin and idolatry, a promise that looks ahead to the work of Jesus. The chapter also shows that God’s refining work can be painful, yet He remains faithful to call His people His own. Adults can take comfort that God keeps His word even when the future seems uncertain.
Avoid overstating the chapter’s more difficult images for children, such as the scattering of the sheep or the stabbing of a false prophet. Focus on God’s faithfulness, cleansing, and love, and keep the tone gentle and age appropriate.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You that You promise to wash us clean and make us pure. Help us to keep our hearts close to You and to put You first. Thank You that we are Your people and You are our God. Please help us to remember Your love every day. Amen.
