This lesson teaches children that God sees who is humble and who trusts Him, even when the world around them is full of trouble. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God takes care of people who seek Him and live humbly, and He will set right what is wrong in the world.
Memory Verse
Zephaniah 2:3
Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger.

Cup your hands together like a little nest, then gently lift them up and say “Seek the Lord!” Do this each time you say the verse. Your hands remind you to reach toward God, the way a child reaches for a parent.
The Story: Zephaniah 2 for Kids
A long time ago, God sent a prophet named Zephaniah to speak to the people of Judah. Many of them had forgotten God and were proud of themselves. Zephaniah told them that a day was coming when God would judge the wrong things they were doing, and he begged them to come back to Him.
Zephaniah also spoke about the nations all around Judah. He told them about the cities of Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron, which were in the land of the Philistines. God said that those cities would be left empty and quiet. Those who had been proud and cruel would no longer be there.
Then Zephaniah turned to people who had trusted God. He said, “The Lord will visit them and restore them.” Those who were humble and kept God’s rules would find safe pastures and quiet homes. They would lie down in the evening without fear, because God was watching over them.
Zephaniah also spoke about Moab and Ammon, who had laughed at God’s people and made fun of them. God said they would be wiped out like the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord said, “This they will have for their pride.” Pride does not last, but God’s people do.
The prophet even spoke about Assyria and its great city Nineveh. God said that Nineveh, which felt so safe and proud, would become a lonely, empty place. Zephaniah described a city where no one would live anymore. Those who walked by would shake their heads in sadness.
Read It Together
Zephaniah 2:1-3
1 Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, you nation that has no shame, 2 before the appointed time when the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD comes on you, before the day of the LORD’s anger comes on you. 3 Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger.
(WEB)
Point out how God calls His people to gather together and seek Him before trouble comes. Ask the children what it means to seek God, and show them that humility means being honest that we need God’s help.
Zephaniah 2:7
The coast will be for the remnant of the house of Judah. They will find pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon, they will lie down in the evening, for the LORD, their God, will visit them, and restore them.

Point out the picture of sheep lying down in safe homes. Explain that God promised to restore His people and give them rest, so they could feel safe and not be afraid.
Zephaniah 2:11
The LORD will be awesome to them, for he will famish all the gods of the land. Men will worship him, everyone from his place, even all the shores of the nations.

Point out that God is greater than every false god and every false idol people might trust in. Tell the children that people from all over the world will one day worship the true God.
Talk About It
- What does it mean to be humble, and why do you think God cares about it?
- How can you seek God when you are at school, at home, or with your friends?
- Why do you think the proud people in this story were not safe?
- What is one way God has taken care of you or your family?
- How does it make you feel to know that God sees everything and cares for the humble?
Activity Ideas
Paper Plate Nest Craft
You will need a paper plate, crayons, cotton balls, and glue. Have the children draw a simple nest in the middle of the plate and glue cotton balls inside it as a soft place to rest. Then they can write or draw the words “Seek the Lord” around the edge. Explain that God’s people can rest safely in Him, just like the sheep in the story.
Seek and Find Game
Hide small objects like coins, pencils, or paper animals around the room while the children close their eyes. When they open them, they search and seek until they find each one. As they search, remind them that the humble people in the story were called to seek God. Give a small reward for each thing found.
Family Verse Jar
Take an empty jar and some strips of paper. Write “Zephaniah 2:3” on a few strips along with “Seek the Lord” and “Be humble.” Place them in the jar and let your child pick one each day at dinner or bedtime to read aloud. This keeps the lesson fresh and gives the family a simple way to talk about seeking God together.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter is a warning and a promise. It calls people to turn back to God before judgment comes, and it reminds us that God protects those who trust Him and walk in humility. Pride leads people to think they are safe on their own, but God is the one who truly cares for and restores His people.
When teaching children, avoid making the lesson too frightening or focusing only on the destruction of the nations. Keep the emphasis on God’s love for the humble and His faithfulness to restore His people, so children hear hope rather than fear.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Lord, we want to seek You every day. Help us to be humble and to know that we need You. Thank You for taking care of us and keeping us safe. Help us to trust You in everything we do. Amen.
