This lesson teaches children that when they seek the LORD and try to do what is right and humble, they are safe in his care, even when the world around them is in trouble. It is best for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God sees those who humbly look for him and keep his ways, and he takes care of them. He is always fair, and he will not let wrong go unanswered forever.
Memory Verse
Zephaniah 2:3
Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger.

Teach the children to put both hands out in front of them, palms up, as if they are asking for help. Then bring the hands slowly together, like a child running home to a parent. Say the verse together while you do the motions twice.
The Story: Zephaniah 2 for Kids
A prophet named Zephaniah lived in the land of Judah a long time ago. He had an important message from God for the people who lived all around them. Zephaniah told them that a big day was coming when God would judge the wrong things people had done. Before that day came, he called everyone to come together and seek God.
Zephaniah spoke to the nations that lived near Judah, like the people of Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron. These cities had been proud and had treated God’s people badly. God said that these cities would be empty and left behind. The sea coast would become quiet fields where shepherds could keep their sheep.
Then Zephaniah gave a special promise to the people of Judah. God said that the remnant, the few who were left, would find safe pastures and rest in the evening. God said, “I will visit them and restore them.” That means God would take care of them and bring them back.
Zephaniah also spoke about the people of Moab and Ammon. They had laughed at God’s people and bragged against them. God said that their land would become like the ruined cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, and that his people would one day take what they once owned.
The prophet then warned the great city of Nineveh in Assyria. The people there felt very safe. They said in their hearts, “I am, and there is no one besides me.” God said that Nineveh would become empty and silent, and that anyone passing by would shake their heads in surprise.
Read It Together
Zephaniah 2:1-3
1 Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, you nation that has no shame, 2 before the appointed time when the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD comes on you, before the day of the LORD’s anger comes on you. 3 Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger.

Point out that God calls people to gather and seek him before trouble comes. Ask the children what it looks like to seek God each day, such as praying, reading the Bible, or helping others.
Zephaniah 2:7
The coast will be for the remnant of the house of Judah. They will find pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon, they will lie down in the evening, for the LORD, their God, will visit them, and restore them.

Show the children the words about God visiting and restoring his people. Explain that God keeps his promises, even when his people feel lost or afraid.
Zephaniah 2:15
This is the joyous city that lived carelessly, that said in her heart, “I am, and there is no one besides me.” How she has become a desolation, a place for animals to lie down in! Everyone who passes by her will hiss, and shake their fists.

Point out how the city felt proud and thought it had no need for anyone else. Talk about how thinking we never need help can make us forget that God is the one who takes care of us.
Talk About It
- What is one way you can show God that you want to follow him this week?
- Why do you think God wanted the people to be humble instead of proud?
- How does it feel to know that God takes care of people who trust him?
- What do you think the people of Nineveh could have done differently?
- When is a time you felt safe because someone was watching over you?
Activity Ideas
Draw a Safe Pasture
Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a quiet green field with a small house and sheep resting nearby. As they draw, talk about how God gives his people a safe place to rest. Let them write a short word such as “safe” or “seek” at the bottom.
Seek and Find Game
Hide small paper cutouts of a heart around the room before class. Tell the children that each heart stands for seeking God. When you say “seek,” they search for a heart and bring it back to you. Talk about how seeking God is something we do every day, not just once.
Take-Home Reminder Card
Cut index cards in half and give one to each child. Ask them to write or draw one way they can seek God at home, like saying thank you at dinner or helping a sibling. Encourage them to place the card on their bedroom door or by their bed so they see it each day.
Teacher Notes
Zephaniah 2 shows that God is both just and merciful. He judges pride and wrongdoing, but he also promises to protect and restore the humble who seek him. For adults, the chapter reminds us that trusting God means letting go of self-importance and depending on his faithfulness.
When teaching children, avoid making the judgments in this chapter sound like something God does casually or cruelly. Keep the focus on God’s care for those who seek him and on the call to humility, rather than dwelling on the destruction of the nations.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank you for taking care of us and for being near to us. Help us to seek you every day and to be humble in how we treat others. Keep us safe in your love and help us always remember that you are good. Amen.
