Pentecost is the day the church remembers the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the believers gathered in Jerusalem, fifty days after Easter. These prayers are written for that day and for any season when you want to ask God to fill you with his presence and power. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Pentecost

Holy Spirit, you came on the believers in Jerusalem as a rushing wind and tongues of fire, and you have not stopped coming since. I am grateful that you are not a distant force but a living presence who dwells with those who trust in Jesus. Today I confess how often I try to live this week on my own strength, planning every outcome and carrying every worry as though it were mine alone. Forgive me for the pride and fear that crowd out your voice.

Fill me again, Lord, the way you filled that upper room. Give me courage where I am timid, especially in the conversations I have been putting off and the kindness I have been holding back. Give me patience with the people closest to me, and wisdom for the decisions waiting on my desk and in my heart. Let your fruit grow in me: love that does not give up, joy that does not depend on circumstances, and peace that steadies me when the news is bad.

Speak to the parts of my life that feel dry or weary. Revive my prayer life, my reading of your word, and my care for the church family you have given me. Send me out with words and actions that point others to Jesus, and make me willing to be used in ways I did not plan. I trust you to do what I cannot. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Holy Spirit, come and fill me now, the way you came on that first Pentecost. Breathe fresh courage into my tired heart and steady my mind. Help me speak with love and act with wisdom in the next hour. Remind me that I am not alone, because you are with me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Acts 2:4

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

Pray this verse by asking the Spirit to fill you afresh today, not as a one-time event but as an ongoing filling for each task and conversation. Ask him to give you words when you need them.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you do not know what to pray. Tell God honestly that your words are thin, and trust the Spirit to carry your deeper needs before the Father.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Read this list slowly and name one quality you most lack. Ask the Spirit to grow that fruit in you this week, and thank him for the ones already taking root.

Ephesians 3:16

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man…

(WEB)

Pray this for your inner life, asking God to strengthen the hidden person of your heart. Let it shape the way you ask for strength when you feel depleted.

John 14:26

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

(WEB)

Pray this when you need to remember what Jesus taught. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring truth to mind at the moment you need it most, especially in hard decisions.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray the longer version early in the morning, before the day’s messages and demands begin. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, and keep a pen nearby so you can write down any impression or memory that surfaces while you pray. Reading the prayer slowly, one paragraph at a time, makes it easier to stay present.

The shorter version works well in the middle of a busy day, in the car before a meeting, or while waiting for a child at school. You might pray it with your hands open on your lap as a reminder that you are receiving rather than grasping. Consider inviting a friend or your small group to pray it together over a shared concern, since Pentecost was first a gathering of many people waiting together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Spirit who came at Pentecost rest on you today with power and peace. May he give you courage for what lies ahead, wisdom for every choice, and love that overflows to those around you. May you walk in the freedom that comes from knowing that God himself dwells within you.
