This list gives you Bible verses about discernment, the ability to tell what is true, wise and good from what only looks that way. It is written for anyone facing a decision, a relationship, a new opportunity or a voice that is hard to read. Each verse is paired with a short reflection and a practical way to carry it into your day.

What these verses share is a simple confidence: God gives wisdom generously, and he meets people who ask for it honestly. They do not promise certainty on demand, but they show a God who guides, corrects and steadies the people who trust him.

Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Decision

Some decisions arrive with no clear answer and a deadline attached. These verses speak to the moment when you know you need wisdom but cannot yet see the way through.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James tells you plainly that wisdom is available for the asking, and that God gives it without scolding you for needing it. Before your next hard choice, write one sentence naming what you are unsure about, then ask God for wisdom about that exact thing.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

This passage asks you to trust God with your full weight, not just the parts of the decision you already understand. A practical step is to list what you are leaning on for reassurance, then quietly set each item down before you choose.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

God promises to instruct and guide, using his own eye on your path rather than leaving you to guess. When you feel stuck, take one small step that is consistent with what you already know is right, and let the next step come into view from there.

Philippians 1:9-10

9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ…

(WEB)

Paul prays that love would grow together with knowledge and discernment, so that you can approve what is excellent. Notice that discernment here is tied to love, not cleverness. Before you decide, ask which option would serve the people affected by it most honestly.

Verses for Telling Truth From Falsehood

Not every voice that sounds confident is trustworthy. These verses help you slow down, test what you hear and hold onto what is genuinely good.

1 John 4:1

Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

(WEB)

John urges believers not to trust every spirit, but to test them. In practice, this means pausing before you accept a teaching, a prophecy or a persuasive person, and checking what they say against Scripture and the character of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:21

Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.

(WEB)

Paul asks you to examine everything and hold fast to what is good. This is not permission to be suspicious of everyone. It is an invitation to be careful, patient and honest, keeping what proves true and letting go of what does not.

Hebrews 5:14

But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

(WEB)

The writer says that mature people have trained their senses to tell good from evil. That kind of skill grows through steady practice, so set aside time each week to read Scripture closely, not only to hear it summarized.

Matthew 7:15-16

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. 16 By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?

(WEB)

Jesus teaches that you will know people by their fruit, which means watching what their words produce over time, not only how they sound in a single moment. When you are unsure about someone, notice how they treat others, handle truth and respond to correction.

Verses for Seeking Wisdom in Everyday Choices

Discernment is not only for crises. Much of it happens in ordinary moments: how you spend money, speak to a friend or use your free evening. These verses fit those quieter decisions.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

Proverbs says the Lord gives wisdom, and that knowledge and understanding come from his mouth. A simple habit is to begin your planning time with a short prayer, asking God to show you what matters most today.

Colossians 1:9

For this cause, we also, since the day we heard this, don’t cease praying and making requests for you, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding…

(WEB)

Paul prays that the Colossians would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Try praying this for a friend or family member this week, asking God to give them clarity in a choice they are facing.

Ephesians 5:15-17

15 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise; 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to walk carefully, making the most of the time and understanding what the Lord’s will is. Keep a short list of your commitments for the week, and ask which ones reflect what you believe matters most.

Proverbs 4:7

Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

(WEB)

The proverb calls wisdom the principal thing and urges you to get understanding above all else. Let that shape a small daily choice, such as what you read in the morning or which conversation you give your attention to first.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes God’s word as a lamp for the feet and a light for the path. When the next step is unclear, read a short passage slowly, one verse at a time, and notice which line speaks to your situation.

Verses for Trusting God When Certainty Is Missing

Sometimes discernment does not bring a clear answer, only a deeper reliance on God. These verses are for the seasons when you must act without full confidence.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Isaiah promises that your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, this is the way, walk in it. Hold this promise loosely and expectantly, and keep attending to the quiet, steady direction that comes through prayer, Scripture and wise counsel.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Paul says transformed minds are what allow you to test and discern God’s will. Begin by noticing one habit of thought that tends to cloud your judgment, such as fear or pride, and bring it honestly to God.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

The psalmist asks God to show his ways and teach his paths, then waits on him all day long. Use this as a morning prayer, naming the uncertainty you carry and asking God to teach you one step at a time.

Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

(WEB)

The proverb recognizes that people plan their course, yet the Lord directs their steps. Plan carefully, then hold those plans open, so that you can adjust with humility when God redirects you.

Psalm 73:24

You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

(WEB)

The psalmist, wrestling with confusion, finds that God guides him with counsel and afterward receives him to glory. When your judgment feels unreliable, remember that your deepest security rests in God’s faithfulness, not in your own certainty.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on a card and keep it where you will see it during decisions, such as beside your desk or in your wallet. Reading them aloud before a meeting, a conversation or a purchase can slow your thinking and remind you what you are asking God for.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn James 1:5 or Psalm 25:4-5 into a request you bring to God by name, and then notice the choices, conversations and quiet convictions that follow. Return to the same verses over several weeks, since discernment grows through repeated, patient attention.

A Short Prayer for Discernment

Lord, I do not always know what is true, wise or good, and I come to you admitting that. You promise to give wisdom generously to those who ask, so I ask now for clarity about the choices in front of me. Show me what is real, and help me see past what only sounds right or looks appealing. Guard my heart from fear and pride, and give me a love for people that shapes how I decide. Teach me one step at a time, and make me willing to change course when you show me the way. Amen.
