This list gives you Bible verses to read when you need courage to face something frightening, difficult or uncertain, whether that is a conversation you dread, a diagnosis you are waiting on, or a decision you cannot undo. Each verse points to the same truth: courage in Scripture is rooted in God’s presence, not in your own nerve.
The verses below are grouped by the kinds of moments where courage is hardest to find. Read them slowly, and let each one speak to the situation you are actually in.
Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Day
Some days courage is needed before the day has even begun. These verses are for the early hours, when the list of things to face feels longer than your energy to face them.
Joshua 1:9
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
(WEB)
God speaks these words to Joshua just before he leads Israel into unknown territory. Before you walk into your day, say the verse aloud once, then name the one task that feels heaviest and ask God to go into it with you.
Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?
(WEB)
David begins this psalm by naming what he fears and then naming who he trusts. Write the phrase “The Lord is my light” on a sticky note and place it where you will see it while you get ready for work or school.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
This verse moves from fear to reassurance in a single breath, and the reassurance is God’s own promise to stay near. Repeat the first clause to yourself while you walk to your car or wait for the bus.
Verses for Facing People and Conversations
Courage is often tested in a room with other people, whether you are speaking up, delivering bad news, or simply being honest. These verses speak to the nerves that come with words spoken face to face.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
(WEB)
Paul reminds Timothy that the timid spirit he feels does not come from God. When you feel your voice shaking before a difficult talk, pause, breathe, and name the specific fear out loud so you can separate it from the truth.
Ephesians 6:10
Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.
(WEB)
Paul tells believers to find their strength in the Lord rather than in themselves. Before a hard conversation, ask God to supply the strength you lack, and note one thing you want to say clearly and kindly.
Acts 4:29
Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness…
(WEB)
After being threatened, the early believers did not ask God to remove the danger. They asked for boldness to keep speaking. Pray this same request before you open your mouth in a meeting or a family discussion.
Verses for Long Waits and Unknown Outcomes
Not all courage is loud. Some of the bravest moments happen while waiting for test results, a court date, or an answer that is slow to come. These verses are for the stretch of time when you cannot yet see the way forward.
Psalm 31:24
Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD.
(WEB)
David calls on his readers to be strong and let their hearts take courage while they wait on the Lord. When you are stuck in waiting, choose one small act of faithfulness each day, such as a prayer, a kind word, or a walk outside.
Romans 8:31
What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
(WEB)
Paul asks a question that reframes every threat: if God is for us, who can be against us. Write this question at the top of a page in your journal and list the worries beneath it, then look at how small the list becomes next to it.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”
(WEB)
Moses speaks these words to the people as they face a future he will not lead them into. When an outcome is out of your control, read this verse and then thank God for one way he has already been faithful this week.
Verses for the Courage to Keep Going
Sometimes courage means not quitting: continuing the hard work of caring for a child, recovering from a setback, or staying faithful when no one notices. These verses speak to endurance as much as to bravery.
1 Corinthians 16:13
Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!
(WEB)
Paul gives a short charge to stay alert, stand firm, and act with courage. Use it as a checklist for one area where you are tempted to drift, and choose one concrete step you can take today to stand firm there.
Galatians 6:9
Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.
(WEB)
Paul promises a harvest for those who do not give up doing good. When you feel like quitting something worthwhile, tell one trusted friend what you are tempted to abandon and ask them to remind you of this verse next week.
Hebrews 12:1
Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us…
(WEB)
The writer pictures faith as a race with a crowd of witnesses cheering from the stands. Picture a few faithful people who have gone before you, and let their example steady you for the next stretch of the road.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
(WEB)
Paul writes this from prison, where he has learned to endure both plenty and hunger. Read it aloud before a task that feels beyond you, and then do the first small piece of it while you still feel the words in your mouth.
How to Use These Verses
Write three or four of these verses on index cards and keep them in your pocket, your bag, or on your bathroom mirror. Choose the one that matches your situation this week, and read it at the moment the fear is strongest rather than only during quiet devotional time.
Pray the verse back to God in your own words. Ask him to make the truth of the verse real in your body as well as your mind, and then take the next step God has put in front of you, however small it looks.
A Short Prayer for finding courage
Lord, you know the fear I am carrying today, and you know the things I am trying not to say out loud. I bring them to you now. Where I feel weak, be my strength. Where I want to run, steady my feet and remind me that you are already in the room.
Give me courage that rests in your character rather than in my own confidence. Help me speak the truth with kindness, wait without giving up, and take the next faithful step even when I cannot see the whole road. Amen.
