This list gives you encouraging Bible verses about thankfulness, arranged by the moments when gratitude is hardest to find: first thing in the morning, in a season of waiting, and in ordinary days that seem to pass without notice. It is written for anyone who wants Scripture to turn their attention toward God’s goodness. These verses share one conviction: thanks is not a feeling we wait for before we speak it, but a response we practice because God is faithful.

Verses for Mornings When Gratitude Feels Far Away

Some days you wake up already tired, and the list of what is wrong arrives before the coffee does. The verses in this section invite you to begin the day by naming God’s goodness before you look at the problems waiting for you.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

The psalmist does not say the day is easy. He says it is the day the Lord has made, and that is reason enough to rejoice. Try reading this verse aloud before you check your phone, then name one specific thing about the day you can receive as a gift.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Jeremiah wrote these words in the middle of a ruined city, which makes them far from naive. His gratitude rests on God’s mercy being renewed each morning. Keep a note of this verse on the kitchen counter and let it remind you that yesterday’s mercy is not the last mercy.

Psalm 5:3

The LORD, in the morning you shall hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.

(WEB)

David speaks his requests to God in the morning and then waits expectantly. Gratitude in this verse is tied to watching for God to act. Spend the first two minutes of your day telling God what you need, then tell him you are looking for his answer.

Verses for Seasons of Waiting and Hardship

Thankfulness is hardest when the answer you hoped for has not come. The verses here do not ask you to pretend that waiting is pleasant. They show that gratitude can grow in the middle of uncertainty because God remains present in it.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Paul wrote this to a young church facing persecution, and he still called them to give thanks in all circumstances. Notice that he links thanks to God’s will for you, not to your circumstances being pleasant. Choose one hard situation this week and thank God for one thing inside it.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Paul pairs anxiety with prayer and thanksgiving, which suggests that gratitude belongs in the middle of your requests. When a worry rises, bring it to God with specific petitions and add a line of thanks for something God has already done. This shifts the weight of the worry without denying it.

Psalm 107:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

This psalm opens with a call to thanks based on God’s enduring love, and it returns repeatedly to people who were rescued from trouble. Think of a past season that God carried you through. Write down the rescue, and read the note the next time you feel that waiting has become forgotten.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Paul asks that the peace of Christ rule in your heart and that you be thankful. Here thanks is connected to peace, not to a perfect outcome. When you feel unsettled, pause and ask God to show you the places where his peace is already at work, then thank him for those places.

Verses for Ordinary Days and Everyday Blessings

Much of life is made of small moments: a shared meal, a kind word, a working car. These verses direct your gratitude toward the blessings that are easy to overlook because they arrive so often.

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.

(WEB)

James reminds us that every good gift comes from above, which means even small blessings have a source worth thanking. At the next meal, before you eat, name one ordinary good thing on the table and trace it back to the God who gives it.

Psalm 136:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

This psalm repeats the same refrain again and again, giving thanks for God’s enduring love in one act of creation and deliverance after another. Try the same pattern yourself by listing three ordinary things and ending each line with the words “his love endures forever.”

Ephesians 5:20

Giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father…

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to give thanks always and for everything in the name of Jesus. The word everything is wide, which makes this verse useful on unremarkable days. At the end of the day, look back over it and name one thing you would have missed if you had not been paying attention.

1 Chronicles 16:34

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

This verse is part of a song of thanks sung when the ark of God was brought into Jerusalem. It grounds gratitude in God’s goodness and steadfast love, which do not depend on your mood. Let it be the simple sentence you return to whenever you cannot think of anything else to say.

Psalm 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

(WEB)

The psalm invites worshipers to enter God’s gates with thanksgiving, as though gratitude were the doorway into his presence. Use it as a way to begin prayer: start with thanks before you bring any requests, and notice how the posture of your heart changes.

Verses for Gratitude in Relationships

Thankfulness also shapes how we treat the people around us. These verses link gratitude to love, patience and the way we speak to family, friends and neighbors.

Colossians 3:17

Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

(WEB)

Paul ties every word and action to the name of Jesus and to thanks offered to God through him. This turns ordinary conversations into acts of gratitude. Before a difficult talk with someone you love, thank God for that person and ask for words that honor both of you.

Psalm 9:1

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart. I will tell of all your marvelous works.

(WEB)

David says he will give thanks with his whole heart and tell of God’s wonderful deeds. Gratitude here is something spoken out loud, shared with others. Choose one person this week and tell them specifically what God has done through them or in their life.

Hebrews 13:15

Through him, then, let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.

(WEB)

The writer calls believers to offer a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that confess God’s name. Praise is treated here as costly and deliberate. Speak one sentence of praise over your household today, even if it feels small, and let it be heard.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses you return to most often on an index card, a sticky note or the inside cover of a notebook. Place them where you already look, such as the bathroom mirror, the car dashboard or the front of your planner. Repetition is what lets a verse move from something you read into something you remember.

Read one verse slowly each morning, then pray it back to God in your own words. You might also use one verse at night as a review of the day, asking where you saw his goodness and where you need his mercy. Over time, these small habits can train your heart to notice gratitude before frustration takes hold.

A Short Prayer for Thankfulness

Lord, you are good, and your love endures forever. Thank you for the breath in my lungs, the people who share my days, and the mercies that are new every morning. Forgive me for the times I have overlooked your gifts or waited for perfect conditions before I gave you thanks. Teach me to notice your hand in ordinary moments and to speak my gratitude plainly to you and to others. Let my thanks rise to you as a steady offering, whatever this day brings. Amen.
