This morning prayer is written for foster parents who want to start the day by placing their home, the children in their care, and the hours ahead into God’s hands. Read it aloud as written before breakfast, in the car, or at the kitchen counter, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the same needs.

Morning Prayers for Foster Parents

Lord, I wake up today already aware of how much is waiting for me. There are children in this house who have lost more than most people will ever know, and some of them will wake up scared, angry, or silent. Give me a steady heart before I give anyone else one. Help me remember that you know each child’s name, history, and fears better than I ever will, and that you are already at work in them before I open my eyes.

Give me patience for the moments that will test it: the missed school bus, the meltdown over cereal, the phone call from a caseworker, the visit with a birth family that stirs up grief in everyone. Keep my words gentle and my tone kind, even when I am tired. Show me where to be firm and where to simply sit beside a child and listen. Guard my marriage, my other children if I have them, and the friendships that keep me going. Let me not carry this alone. Open the door of today wide enough for grace, and keep my hands open enough to receive whatever you send. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am stretched thin this morning, and I need you before the first child comes down the stairs. Settle my heart and give me calm for the next hour. Help me see each child as you see them, and help me speak to them with patience and truth. Carry what I cannot carry on my own, and remind me that I am not the only one who loves these children. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the house feels unsteady and you need to remember where your refuge is. Ask God to be the place you run to before you run to your own strength, and let that shape how you meet the day’s first crisis.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you feel worn down by the demands of caring for others. Ask the Lord to renew your strength for the specific tasks ahead, the school run, the paperwork, the bedtime that will come later.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when yesterday was hard and today feels like a repeat. Thank God that his compassion is new each morning, and ask him to let that same mercy reach the children and the difficult conversations you may face.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to bring your anxieties about placements, court dates, and the children’s futures directly to God. Ask for the peace that guards the heart, so that worry does not take over the hours you have been given.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you cannot see how a situation will turn out. Ask God to direct your steps today, especially in decisions about discipline, visits, and how to support a child who is hurting.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment in your morning, such as while the coffee brews or before anyone else is awake, so the prayer becomes part of the rhythm of the day rather than another task. If your home is noisy, pray it quietly in the bathroom, the car, or while you pack lunches, letting your hands keep busy with something simple. Keeping a small note with the verses on your phone or fridge can help you return to them when the day gets loud.

Consider inviting your spouse, a trusted friend, or a church small group to pray the same words for your home on certain mornings. Many foster families find it helpful to name each child by first name during the prayer, which keeps the focus on the actual people you are caring for. Let that shared prayer remind you that the work of foster care belongs to a wider community and to God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this family today and walk beside every child in the home. May he give the foster parent calm hands, a patient voice, and a heart that knows it is loved. May the day hold small mercies that reach further than anyone can see.
