This prayer is for the end of a day when your mind will not slow down, your body is tired, and you want to hand the night to God before you close your eyes. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and before you lie down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about whatever is still weighing on you.

Morning Prayers for a Restful Night

Lord, the day is ending and I am still carrying pieces of it. There was the conversation that went badly, the message I meant to answer and didn’t, the bill I keep thinking about, and the worry about tomorrow that crept in while I was trying to do something else. I bring all of it to You now and set it down in Your hands. You know every detail I cannot fix tonight, and You are not tired.

Quiet my thoughts the way a parent settles a child, not by force but by presence. Where I have sinned today, forgive me, and where others have hurt me, help me release them to You rather than replaying it in the dark. Thank You for the small mercies of this day: the warm drink, the work that got done, the friend who called, the moment of laughter I did not expect. Let me remember them as I fall asleep.

Watch over my home and everyone sleeping under its roof tonight. Guard us from fear and from harm, and give my body the rest it needs to heal and grow strong. When I wake, let me meet the morning as a gift and not as a weight. I trust You with the hours I cannot see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my mind is restless and my body is done for the day. I give You what I could not finish, what I could not fix, and what I could not understand. Calm my heart, forgive what needs forgiving, and keep watch while I sleep. Give me rest that is real and not just a pause before the next worry. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let the first words become your own. Pray it as a declaration that you are choosing to rest on God’s safety rather than on your own ability to stay alert all night.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

When you feel guilty for stopping, pray this verse as a reminder that striving without end is not the same as faithfulness. Ask God to show you where you have been working harder than He asked.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear shows up at night. Name the specific fear out loud, then tell God that you lay down and slept because He sustains you.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this one by naming the exact burdens you are carrying tonight. Imagine each one being handed over, and ask Jesus to give you the rest He promises in place of them.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn the anxious thoughts of the day into specific requests, one by one, as you pray. Ask God to guard your heart and mind with His peace as you drift toward sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time each evening, perhaps after you wash up or before you turn off the lamp by your bed. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand by the window for a minute so your body knows it is winding down. If your mind keeps wandering, rest one hand on your chest or hold a cool glass of water, and return to the next line of the prayer rather than starting over.

If you share a home, invite someone you trust to pray it with you, or ask a spouse, roommate or child to say it over you once you are settled. You might also keep a small notebook by the bed and write down anything that surfaces, then pray it aloud. Giving the worry a place to land makes it easier to leave it there.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May He calm the thoughts that circle and settle the body that aches. May you sleep without fear, wake refreshed, and find that His mercies are new again in the morning.
