This is a morning prayer for our leaders, the people in government, the church, the workplace and the home who carry responsibility for others. Pray it first thing, while the day is still quiet, before the phone and the news begin to pull at your attention. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your concerns are more specific.

Morning Prayers for Our Leaders

Lord, you are the one who sets up kings and removes them, and you know every decision that will be made in rooms we will never enter today. We bring before you the leaders of our nation, our city, our church and our workplaces. Give them clear thinking when the information is incomplete and the pressure is high. Protect them from fear that makes them hasty, and from pride that makes them deaf to correction. Help them tell the truth when it costs them something, and keep them honest when no one is watching.

We pray for the leaders who are tired this morning, the ones who lie awake running numbers, rehearsing hard conversations, or wondering whether anyone sees what they carry. Meet them in that exhaustion. Give them sleep when they need it and strength when they do not have it. Surround them with people who will tell them the truth and pray for them without needing anything in return. Keep their families steady while their attention is stretched thin, and let their homes remain places of rest and love.

Father, let our leaders remember that their authority is borrowed and that they will answer to you for how they used it. Turn their hearts toward the vulnerable, the poor, the sick, the lonely and the stranger. Where they have made mistakes, give them the humility to own them and the courage to make them right. And as for us, make us faithful in praying for them even when we disagree with them. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring the leaders over my life to you this morning. Give them wisdom for the choices in front of them today, and let their decisions serve the good of the people they lead. Keep them from pride and fear, and give them courage to do what is right. Protect their families and give them rest. Thank you that you hear every prayer, even the short ones. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul asks that prayers be made for all people, kings and those in authority, so that we may live quiet and peaceful lives. Use this verse to start your prayer by asking God to bless the leaders who shape the conditions of your daily life.

Proverbs 21:1

The king’s heart is in the LORD’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires.

(WEB)

This verse says the king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord and that he directs it like channels of water. Pray it as a reminder that no leader is beyond God’s reach, and ask him to turn their hearts toward wisdom and justice.

Proverbs 11:14

Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.

(WEB)

Proverbs teaches that safety comes through many counselors. Pray that your leaders would have trustworthy advisers who speak truth to them, and that they would have the sense to listen.

Psalm 72:1-2

1 God, give the king your justice; your righteousness to the royal son. 2 He will judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice.

(WEB)

This psalm asks God to give the king his justice and righteousness, so that the people are governed fairly. Pray these words over leaders who must make judgments that affect many lives.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

Jeremiah told exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived and to pray for it. Let this verse teach you to pray for the good of your community and the people who govern it, even when you feel far from them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still sitting down, before your first screen, notification or conversation of the day. A cup of coffee or tea in your hands can become a quiet cue to slow down. If you commute, you can pray the shorter version silently as you drive or walk, naming a leader by name when you think of them.

This prayer is also a good one to share. Invite a spouse, friend, small group or coworker to pray it with you, reading one paragraph each. When you pray together, the leaders on your list become real people with real burdens, and the prayer carries more weight than any one person could give it alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows every heart go before your leaders today and give them clear sight and steady hands. May he give you a calm spirit and a willing heart to pray for them, and may his peace guard your mind as you step into the day ahead.
