This morning prayer is written for the nation we live in, and it is meant to be prayed at the start of the day, before the first cup of coffee or the first news alert. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. It asks God for wisdom, mercy and peace for leaders, neighbors and everyone you will meet today.

Morning Prayers for Our Nation

Lord, I come to You before the noise of this day begins. Thank You for the gift of another morning and for the country where You have placed me. I pray for our nation as I start my work, my errands and my conversations. Give our leaders wisdom when they make decisions that affect families they will never meet. Keep them honest when pressure tempts them to bend the truth, and humble enough to listen to people who disagree with them.

Father, I pray for the people I will see today: the cashier counting out change, the coworker carrying a heavy worry, the neighbor who is quietly struggling to pay the bills. Let our nation be a place where the poor are cared for, where the sick find help, and where children feel safe going to school. Guard our courts, our police, our teachers and our public servants. Where we are divided, teach us to speak gently and to seek the good of others before our own advantage. Heal the anger that spills into our streets and our screens, and remind us that we belong to one another. I ask all of this in the name of Jesus, who loves this world more than I ever could. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless our nation today. Guide those who lead us, protect those who serve us, and comfort those who are hurting. Help me to be a peacemaker in the places I go and to treat each person I meet with dignity. Let my words and actions bring a little more kindness into this land. Thank You that You hear every prayer, even the short ones. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges that prayers be made for kings and all in authority. Use this verse to ask God for every leader in government and public life, naming those you know about and trusting Him with the rest.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

God told exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived. Pray this for your town and your country, asking that the place you call home would flourish and that you would contribute to its good.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord requires: justice, mercy and humble walking with God. Pray that our nation would practice fairness and kindness in its laws and in its daily life, and that you would live this way today.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

(WEB)

This psalm declares that the nation whose God is the Lord is blessed. Pray that our country would turn toward God in humility, and that its people would find their security in Him rather than in power or wealth.

Romans 13:1

Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God.

(WEB)

Paul reminds believers that authority is established under God. Pray that those who hold public office would govern with integrity, and that you would respect them even when you disagree.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer while you are still in bed, or sitting at the kitchen table before you check your phone. Keep a cup of tea or water in your hands to slow your body down. You might also keep a short list of names beside you, such as local officials, a family member in the military, or a friend who works in healthcare, and pray for each one by name as you finish.

Invite someone else to join you, whether a spouse, a roommate or a friend on the phone. Agreeing together in prayer for our nation is a simple way to remember that you are not carrying this burden alone. You could also pray the shorter version on your drive to work or while the kettle boils, returning to the longer prayer whenever you have a few quiet minutes.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every task. May He give wisdom to those who lead our nation, peace to those who are weary, and courage to every person who works for what is right. May you carry His kindness into every room you enter.
