This simple prayer after an argument is for the hours when a disagreement has left you raw, defensive or ashamed, and you do not yet know how to bring it back to peace. Pray it as soon as you can after the raised voices fade, while you are still sitting in the quiet that follows. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once you find them.

Simple Prayer After an Argument

Lord, I come to You tired and still a little shaken. We argued, and I know my words were not all kind. Some of what I said came from pride, and some came from fear that I am not heard or respected. Please show me which of my words hurt, and give me the honesty to name them without hiding behind how I was provoked. Soften the places in me that want to be right more than I want to be loving.

I also ask You to be near the one I argued with. Guard their heart tonight, and let them feel that they are not alone or dismissed. Where they are hurt, comfort them. Where they are angry, calm them. Give us both the grace to listen before we defend, and the humility to say we are sorry without making it a trade. Keep our home from becoming a place where we stop speaking to each other kindly. Help us remember that we belong to one another, even when we disagree. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I got it wrong in that argument, and I am sorry. Forgive the sharp things I said, and forgive the ways I pulled away. Help me speak the truth in love and not as a weapon. Soften my heart toward the one I hurt, and give us both peace where there was conflict. Let me take the first step toward them tomorrow, in Your strength and not my own. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:26-27

26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 and don’t give place to the devil.

(WEB)

Paul acknowledges that anger can arise, but warns against letting it settle overnight. When you pray this after a fight, ask God to show you what is still unresolved in you before the day ends, and ask Him to help you release it so it does not take root.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

This verse names the pattern that so often starts an argument: speaking too quickly and listening too little. Pray it slowly, asking God to slow your speech and widen your ears for the next conversation with this person.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul connects forgiveness with the way Christ has forgiven us. Pray this verse as an honest request for the willingness to forgive, even when you still feel the sting of what was said.

Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

(WEB)

Here the wise person is described as one whose gentle answer turns away anger. Use this verse to ask God for a softer tone in your next words, especially when the first response that comes to mind feels sharp.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Paul recognizes that peace is not always fully in our control, yet he still asks us to do what we can. Pray this verse by asking God to show you what is yours to do toward peace, and to release what is not.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying it once the house is quiet, perhaps sitting in a chair you return to often, with your hands open in your lap or resting on a cup of something warm. Speaking slowly helps you notice where your heart is still tight. If you find yourself rehearsing your side of the argument while you pray, gently bring your attention back to the words and to the person you are asking God to bless.

If you share a home or a life with the person you argued with, consider praying the same words for them, or asking a trusted friend, a spouse, or a church member to pray with you. Hearing someone else speak these requests can soften a hard evening and remind you that you are not carrying the repair alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard the hearts of everyone involved in this disagreement and keep them safe from bitterness. May He give patience to the one who feels unheard and humility to the one who feels wronged. May His peace settle over the home tonight and carry into tomorrow’s first words.
