This prayer is for the seasons when life is shifting under your feet, whether you are starting a new job, moving to a new city, becoming a parent, grieving a loss, or entering retirement. Pray it when you feel the ground moving and want to bring your fear, hope and questions to God before the next decision or the next day. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak more freely in your own words.

Prayer During a Life Transition

Lord, you see the change I am living through, and you know how unsettled I feel. Some things I was used to are gone, and some things I am not ready for have arrived. I do not know exactly what the next months will hold, and I confess that part of me wants to hold on to what is familiar. Please steady my heart. Quiet the restless voice that tells me I have to figure everything out by myself tonight.

Give me wisdom for the decisions in front of me, the small ones and the large ones. Show me what to do next, even if it is only the next step. Help me to be honest about what I am feeling, including the grief, the excitement, the fear and the relief that sometimes come all at once. Where I am tempted to measure myself against others who seem to have it together, remind me that you have made my path and my timing. Keep my family and friends close, and let them know how to care for me well.

Thank you that you do not change, even when everything around me does. I rest in your faithfulness today, and I ask you to walk with me through this season and into whatever comes after it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel unsettled in this change, and I do not know what comes next. Be my steady place right now. Give me the wisdom for the next step and the courage to take it without needing to see the whole road. Help me trust that you are already in the days ahead of me. Hold me in the middle of this, and let me feel your nearness in it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Pray this when a transition feels like deep water or a fire you have to walk through. Thank God that the promise is his presence with you, not an absence of difficulty, and ask him to keep you company in each hard moment.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this when you are tempted to lean on your own plans or fears. Bring your uncertainty to God and ask him to make clear the paths you need to take, one decision at a time.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

Read this slowly when the world around you feels shaky. Name the specific changes that have you anxious, then declare that God is your refuge and strength in them.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when worry keeps circling back. Turn each anxious thought into a specific request, and ask God to guard your heart and mind with a peace that does not depend on circumstances.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Turn to this when the new season feels like a loss or an ending. Thank God for his mercies that are new each morning, and ask him to show you one fresh mercy in today’s ordinary moments.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the early morning or at the end of the day, when the house is quiet and the to-do list has not yet taken over. Sit at the kitchen table or in a chair by a window, and keep a notebook nearby so you can write down any fears or decisions you want to bring back to God later. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup of tea, a stone or a wedding ring while you pray.

You can also pray this with someone else. A spouse, close friend, pastor or small group can read the prayer aloud, pausing after each paragraph so you can add your own requests. Being prayed for by someone who knows your situation can make the transition feel less lonely, and it reminds you that God often works through the people he places around us.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every new place and stay with you in every ending. May he give you wisdom for each choice and rest for each weary night. May you know that you are seen, held and loved in this season, and may his peace guard your heart as you step forward.
