This prayer is for the stretch of time when you are waiting on a result, a diagnosis, a job decision, a child’s return, or an answer you cannot yet see. Pray it in the waiting room, at the kitchen table before dawn, or in the car before you walk inside. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where the prayer falls short.

Short Prayer During a Long Wait

Lord, I am waiting, and the waiting is wearing me down. The phone has not rung, the email has not arrived, and every hour feels longer than the last. I keep checking, rehearsing bad outcomes, and wondering whether I have missed something I should be doing. Quiet my mind tonight. Show me what is mine to do today and what I need to leave in your hands.

Father, you already know the thing I am most afraid of, and you have not been surprised by it. Hold the people I am worried about, and hold me while I wait for news about them. Keep me from filling the silence with fear. Let me rest in the truth that you are working even when I cannot see the work.

Thank you that waiting is not wasted with you. Teach me patience that is more than gritted teeth, and trust that is more than hope. Give me enough strength for this hour, and then enough for the next. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am waiting and I feel impatient. Slow my heart down right now. Remind me that you see the whole road even when I only see the next step. Give me peace for this minute, and I will ask again for the next one. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When your thoughts race ahead of the outcome, pray this verse slowly. Let the command to be still become a request for God to quiet the restless part of you that wants control of the timeline.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Long waits drain energy as well as hope. Pray this promise over your tiredness, asking God to renew what waiting has used up, one ordinary day at a time.

Romans 8:25

But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

(WEB)

Paul describes hope as something we wait for with patience. Use this verse to ask God to make your waiting steady, not frantic, and to help you hold on to what you have not yet seen.

Lamentations 3:25

The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of the goodness of God toward those who wait for him. Pray it when you are tempted to think the delay means you have been forgotten, and ask him to show you his goodness in small ways today.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxiety to prayer in a single breath. Let these verses guide you to bring each worry to God by name, and then to notice the peace that can settle in when you finish praying.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment in your day, such as just after you wake up or during your lunch break, and pray this prayer then so that waiting has a place to land. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup of tea, a rosary, or a worn stone in your pocket, and let each breath become a small act of trust. You may also invite a trusted friend or family member to pray it with you or for you, especially on the days when the wait feels heaviest.

When the phone rings or the news arrives, return to the prayer whatever the result is. If the answer is hard, speak the prayer again with honest tears, and ask God to walk with you into what comes next. If the answer is good, thank him aloud before you tell anyone else.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord steady your heart in every waiting hour and keep your mind from running ahead of his plans. May he give you rest that the outcome cannot take away, and grace enough for the day you are in. May he remind you that the one who has led you this far has not left you now.
