When life feels unfair, the anger, hurt and confusion can be hard to put into words, and a prayer can give them a place to land. The prayers below are written for those moments when you have done what was asked of you and still lost ground, when someone else seems to get the breaks, or when the injustice of a situation has worn you down. You can pray them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers When Life Feels Unfair

Lord, I am tired of watching things go wrong for reasons I cannot see and did not choose. I did what I was supposed to do. I worked, I kept my word, I tried to treat people well, and still the outcome feels stacked against me. I am angry, and I am not sure what to do with that anger, so I am bringing it to you instead of holding it in or letting it turn into bitterness toward the people around me.

You see what I cannot see. You know the full story behind the decisions that hurt me, the motives I cannot read, and the consequences that have not yet arrived. Help me trust that you are not indifferent to what is unjust. Guard my heart from resentment, and keep me from believing that my worth depends on how fairly I am treated. Give me wisdom for the next step, the courage to speak truth where I can, and the patience to leave what is beyond my control in your hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, this is not fair, and I am hurting. I do not understand why this is happening, but I know you see it. Steady my breathing and steady my heart. Show me the one thing I can do well in the next hour, and carry the rest of what I cannot fix. Thank you that I am not alone with this. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 37:5-6

5 Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this: 6 he will make your righteousness go out as the light, and your justice as the noon day sun.

(WEB)

Pray these verses when you feel that you must defend yourself or prove your case. Ask God to take over the vindication you want, trusting that he will bring light to what is hidden.

Psalm 10:14

But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.

(WEB)

This verse names God as the one who sees trouble and grief and takes them into his own hands. Pray it when you feel that no one notices what has been done to you.

Romans 12:19

Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

(WEB)

Use this verse to release your desire for revenge. Ask God to help you leave room for his justice rather than carrying the weight of repaying every wrong yourself.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

When unfairness has left you exhausted, pray these words for strength. Ask God to renew your energy so that you can keep going without losing your footing.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the hurt feels deep and personal. It reminds you that God draws near to people whose hearts are broken, and you can ask him to come close now.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version at the start or end of your day, when the frustration tends to rise. Sit somewhere quiet, with a cup of something warm in your hands or a pen and paper nearby. Writing down the specific people, decisions or losses you are angry about can help you name them clearly before you give them to God, and you may find it useful to return to that list each week.

If you are praying with a spouse, close friend or small group, invite them to pray the shorter version over you while you listen. Hearing someone else speak your hurt back to God can loosen the knot in your chest. Afterward, ask that person to check in with you in a few days, so the prayer has a place to continue beyond one moment.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who sees every injustice also keep your heart from hardening. May he give you steady hope when the scales seem tipped, and wisdom for each small step ahead. May he be your defender when you cannot defend yourself, and may you rest today in the certainty that you are known and not forgotten.
