This simple prayer is for the times when you are grieving, whether the loss is a death, a divorce, a diagnosis or a dream that will not happen now. You can pray it in the morning before the day begins, late at night when the house is quiet, or whenever the ache rises up without warning. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces between.

Simple Prayer When You Are Grieving

Lord, I am sad, and I do not have the strength to hide it. Some mornings I wake up and forget for a moment, and then the loss comes back all at once. I miss the person or the life that is gone, and I do not know how to carry the empty places in my days. Please come close to me in this. Be near to the tired part of me that cannot pray well and cannot make sense of what happened.

I bring you the questions I cannot answer. Why this, and why now? What do I do with the tasks that used to belong to someone else, or with the plans that no longer make sense? I do not need neat answers today. I only need to know that you see me and that you have not turned away. Hold the parts of my heart that feel too heavy to hold myself.

Give me rest where I can find it, and give me small mercies to get through each hour. Let the people who love me reach toward me, and help me accept their help without pride or shame. Teach me to grieve honestly, without pretending I am fine and without losing hope that you are still good. I trust you with what I have lost and with what I am still learning to live without. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am grieving right now, and the ache is loud. Be near me in this moment and steady my breathing. Hold what I have lost and hold me while I hold it. Help me take the next small step, and remind me that I am not alone in this room or in this sorrow. I trust you with what I cannot carry. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the grief feels like it has crushed your spirit. Ask God to draw near to the broken places you cannot name, and rest in the promise that he does not pass them by.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you feel that no one can mend what has been torn. Name the wounds one at a time, and ask him to do the slow, careful healing that only he can do.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly when tears come easily. Thank Jesus for speaking comfort to mourners, and ask him to let that blessing reach the part of you that still feels alone.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

Turn to this verse when the grief seems endless. Let it lift your eyes toward the day when sorrow will end, and ask God to give you hope that stretches beyond this season.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray this passage with gratitude for the God of all comfort. Ask him to make you a little more able to comfort others later, because he has comforted you now.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can sit or kneel without being rushed, such as early morning with a cup of tea or in the car before you go inside. If your hands feel restless, hold a cup, a photograph, a smooth stone or the edge of a blanket while you pray. Let the words be slow. You may need to pause after each paragraph and simply breathe before going on.

You can also invite someone you trust to pray it with you or over you. A friend, a pastor, a family member or a small group can read it aloud while you listen. If words are simply not possible, sit quietly and let the prayer be read to you. God hears the silent ache as clearly as the spoken one.

A Blessing to Close

May the God of all comfort surround you in the days ahead and steady your heart when it trembles. May you feel his nearness in small and unexpected ways, and may the people who love you carry you gently. May the grief you bear be held in mercy until the day when every tear is wiped away.
