When you are struggling, you may not know what to say to God, or you may only have enough strength for a sentence. This page gives you a full prayer for those hard seasons, along with a shorter version for a moment when your heart is racing or your eyes are wet. Pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces.

Prayers When You Are Struggling

Lord, you see me in this place where I am tired and worn thin. Some mornings I wake up already carrying the weight of what I am facing, and by evening I am too drained to think clearly. I am worried about what is coming, and I replay the hardest moments over and over until I cannot rest. Please meet me in the middle of it. Steady my breathing and quiet the noise in my head so that I can hear you.

I confess that I have been trying to hold everything on my own. I have been pretending I am fine when I am not, and I have been afraid to tell anyone how bad it really is. Forgive me for the pride that keeps me silent and the fear that keeps me from asking for help. Show me the people you have placed around me, and give me the courage to let them carry some of this with me. Remind me that I do not have to be strong for you to love me.

Be near to me in the hours when I feel most alone. When my body is heavy and my hope feels thin, hold me the way a good parent holds a frightened child. Give me enough strength for today, not the whole future all at once. Help me take the next small step, and when I cannot take even that, carry me. I trust that you are faithful, and I ask you to help me trust you again tomorrow. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am struggling right now and I cannot find the words for all of it. You know what is weighing on me. Calm my heart, steady my hands, and remind me that you are close. Help me take the next honest step, and give me one person to reach out to today. I am choosing to trust you with this moment. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel that the ground is shifting under you. Say the words slowly and name the trouble you are facing, then ask God to be the refuge you run to instead of the fear you keep returning to.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you are exhausted in body and spirit. Picture yourself bringing the heavy load to Jesus, setting it down for a moment, and telling him honestly how tired you are.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your heart feels broken or your spirit is crushed. Ask God to draw near to you in that specific place of pain, trusting that he does not turn away from people who are hurting.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Let this passage guide your worry into prayer. Write down the specific anxieties on your mind, then pray over each one, asking God for the peace that is bigger than your understanding.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when fear is loud and you feel unsure of your footing. Repeat God’s promise of his presence back to him, asking him to make it real to you in this particular situation.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time of day when you can be still, such as early in the morning before the house wakes up, during a lunch break in your car, or in bed before sleep. Sit in a chair with both feet on the floor and your hands open in your lap, or hold something ordinary like a mug or a smooth stone. Physical details like these can help your body settle while your mind works through the words.

You can also pray this prayer with someone you trust. Read it aloud together, or ask a friend, spouse, or pastor to pray the shorter version over you. If you feel too overwhelmed to speak, you can read it silently or let the words roll through your mind while you walk. God hears honest prayer whether it is spoken, whispered, or written in a notebook.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be the steady ground beneath you in this season of struggle. May he give you rest when you are weary, courage when you are afraid, and people who remind you that you are not alone. May his peace guard your heart and mind as you take the next step.
