This short prayer is for the moments when sadness settles in and the words to God won’t come easily. Pray it when you feel low in the morning, after a hard phone call, or late at night when the house is quiet and your thoughts won’t slow down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words beneath it.

Short Prayer When You Feel Sad

Lord, I don’t feel like myself today. There is a heaviness in my chest that I can’t quite explain, and some of it comes from things I can name: the disappointment that has been building, the people I miss, the worry about what comes next. I’m tired of pretending I’m fine. So I’m bringing you the sadness as it is, without dressing it up.

You already know the reasons, even the ones I haven’t put into words yet. Meet me in the small things that feel impossible right now, like getting out of bed, answering a message, or sitting at the table with a cup of coffee going cold. Let me feel your nearness even if I can’t feel much of anything else. Help me not to be ashamed of tears, and remind me that you have never been surprised by my sorrow.

Hold me in the hours I don’t see the way forward. Give me enough rest tonight to face tomorrow, and enough honesty to tell someone who loves me how I’m really doing. I trust that you are near to the brokenhearted, and I ask you to be near to me now. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am sad right now, and I don’t have much to say. You see me and you know what this feels like. Stay close while I breathe slowly, and give me one small step I can take in the next hour. Lift some of this weight, even just a little, so I can keep going. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

When sadness makes you feel far from God, pray this verse as a simple statement of his nearness. Say the words slowly and let them remind you that your heartbreak does not push him away. Ask him to make that nearness real to you today.

Psalm 42:11

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks to his own soul, asking why it is so downcast. Use this verse to talk to yourself the way a friend would, and then turn your hope toward God. Pray that your hope would be renewed even while the sadness is still present.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him. When you feel worn down by sadness, pray this as an honest response, telling him you are coming and asking for the rest only he can give. Name the specific burden you are carrying.

Psalm 56:8

You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God keeping track of every tear. Pray it when you feel that no one notices your pain, and let the picture of God’s careful attention comfort you. Thank him that your tears are not wasted or overlooked.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God’s promise to strengthen and help his people is especially steadying when your own strength feels gone. Pray this slowly, emphasizing the words about his presence and help. Ask him to steady you in the places where you feel most unsteady.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still for a few minutes, such as early in the morning, during a lunch break, or before bed. Sit somewhere comfortable, and if your hands feel restless, hold a cup, a blanket, or a smooth stone while you pray. Let the physical act of holding something give your body a place to rest while your heart speaks.

If you don’t have the energy to pray alone, ask a trusted friend, family member, or pastor to pray the words over you, or read them together. Hearing someone else speak them can make the prayer feel less lonely. Come back to it on hard days, and don’t worry if the words feel flat; God is still listening.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord come close to you in this sadness and hold you steady through it. May he give you rest when you are weary, gentle words when you cannot find your own, and friends who carry you when you cannot walk. May you know, even in the dark hours, that you are seen, loved, and not forgotten.
