This simple prayer is for the times when sadness settles over you and the words do not come easily. Pray it when you wake up heavy, when you sit alone with a hard memory, or when tears come without warning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer When You Feel Sad

Lord, I come to you today feeling sad, and I am not sure how to explain it. Some of it is loss, the person I miss and the plans that did not work out. Some of it is tiredness, the kind that sleep does not fix. Some of it I cannot name at all. I am bringing all of it to you just as it is, without pretending it is smaller than it is.

Be near me in this heaviness. Sit with me in the quiet part of the morning or the long evening when the house is still. Remind me that you see what I cannot see clearly right now, and that you have not turned away from me. When my thoughts run in circles, slow them down. When I feel like I am carrying everything alone, show me the people and the small mercies you have already placed around me.

Hold my heart gently and give me enough strength for the next hour, and then the one after that. I trust that you are faithful even when I cannot feel it. Let this sadness be a place where I learn to lean on you more honestly. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am sad right now and I need you. Be close to me in this moment and steady my breathing. Hold what I cannot hold, and remind me that I am not alone. Help me take the next small step, and let your peace reach the places that hurt. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when your heart feels broken. Ask the Lord to draw near to you in the exact spot where the hurt is, and thank him that nearness is part of who he is.

Psalm 42:11

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

(WEB)

Pray this when your soul feels downcast. Speak to your own heart the way the psalmist does, naming the sadness and then turning your hope back toward God.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel weary and burdened. Bring the exhaustion to Jesus by name, and ask him to give you rest in ways that go deeper than sleep.

Psalm 56:8

You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?

(WEB)

Pray this when tears seem to fall unnoticed. Tell God that your sorrow is seen and remembered, and let that truth soften the loneliness of crying alone.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray this for comfort that you can later pass on to others. Thank God as the Father of mercies and the source of comfort, and ask him to meet you in your sadness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as first thing in the morning or just before bed, and sit somewhere you can be still. If your hands feel restless, hold a cup of tea, rest a palm on your chest, or hold a worn item that reminds you of God’s faithfulness. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it settle. You do not need to finish quickly.

You can also invite someone you trust to pray it with you or over you. A friend, a spouse, or a pastor can read it aloud while you listen. If sadness lingers for weeks or begins to affect your sleep, eating, or ability to care for yourself, talk with a doctor or counselor as well. Praying and seeking help are both ways of letting God work through the people and resources he provides.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be near to this heart that is grieving and steady it with his quiet strength. May he remind you that your tears are known, your burdens are welcome, and your life is held in his care. May his peace guard you through the hours ahead and bring light into the places that feel dark.
