This short prayer is for the moments when you do not know which way to turn, whether the decision is large or small, urgent or slow to form. Pray it when you are standing at a crossroads, when advice seems to contradict itself, or when your own thoughts keep circling without landing. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak your own specifics in the spaces between the lines.

Short Prayer When You Need Guidance

Lord, I come to you because I do not see clearly right now. I have turned this question over in my mind until I am tired of it, and I still cannot tell which path is the right one. Some of the options look good on paper, and some of them frighten me, and I do not trust my own feelings to sort them out. Please show me what I cannot see from where I am standing.

Quiet the noise inside me and around me. Help me set aside the voices that push me toward fear, pride, or the need to have everything settled by tomorrow. Give me patience to wait when waiting is wise, and courage to move when the way opens. Let my heart be willing to hear your answer even if it is not the one I expected. Guide my steps one honest decision at a time, and keep me close to you while I walk them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I do not know what to do next. Show me the way, and give me the wisdom to recognize it when it comes. Calm my anxious thoughts so I can listen. Keep me from rushing ahead of you, and keep me from freezing in place. Lead me in what is good and true, and let me trust that you are already at work in this situation. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray these words when your own reasoning feels too thin to carry the decision. Ask God to help you release the need to understand every step before you take it, and to trust that he will make your path straight as you walk it.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

This verse is an open invitation. When you feel foolish for not knowing the answer, bring the request plainly to God, trusting that he gives generously and does not scold you for asking.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it become a prayer of attention. Ask God to teach you and to guide you with his eye on you, so that you are listening for his direction rather than only pushing forward on your own.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you can see only a few steps ahead. Pray that God’s word would light the next step for you, even if the whole route remains hidden, and thank him for giving enough light for today.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Pray this when you are unsure whether you are hearing God at all. Ask him to make his direction audible to you, and to help you recognize it in Scripture, in wise counsel, and in the quiet conviction of your heart.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment, perhaps early in the morning before the day fills up, or in the car before you walk into a difficult conversation. Sit with a cup of something warm, or stand by a window, and let your hands rest open in your lap or at your sides. Read the main prayer once slowly, then pause after each sentence to notice what stirs in you. If a specific name or decision comes to mind, speak it aloud to God.

You can also pray this with someone else. Ask a trusted friend, a spouse, or a member of your church to pray it with you or over you, especially when the decision feels too heavy to hold alone. Write the words on a card and keep it in your wallet or on your phone so you have them ready when the need arises during a busy day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows the way before you go before you now. May he open the right door and close the wrong one with gentleness. May he give your heart rest in his wisdom and your feet steady ground for the next step. Go forward in peace, knowing that you are seen, you are led, and you are not left to find the way alone.
