This short prayer is for the days when hope feels thin and you need to turn your heart back toward God. Pray it when you wake up discouraged, when a diagnosis or a bill or a silence from someone you love is pressing on you, or any time you feel you have run out of reasons to keep going. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in place of mine.
Short Prayer When You Need Hope
Lord, I come to you tired, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. I am carrying more than I can name clearly right now: the worry about money that keeps me up at night, the fear of what the test results might say, the ache of a relationship that feels stuck. Some mornings I cannot see past the next hour, and I am ashamed of how little I feel like hoping. Thank you that you already know every one of these things, and that nothing catches you off guard.
Give me hope that is rooted in who you are and not in how I feel today. Remind me that you have carried people through worse than this, and that you have not changed. Steady my breathing, quiet my racing thoughts, and help me take the next small step in front of me. Let me rest for a moment in your faithfulness, even if I cannot yet feel it. I trust you with what I cannot fix. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am running low on hope, and I need you to meet me here. Be near me in this moment, steady my heart, and show me one honest reason to keep going. I give you the fear I cannot shake and the outcome I cannot control. Help me trust that you are working even when I cannot see it. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 42:5
Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.
(WEB)
The psalmist speaks to his own discouraged soul and tells it to hope in God. When you pray this, you can talk to yourself the same way, naming your low mood and then directing it back toward the God you still trust.
Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
(WEB)
Paul prays that God would fill believers with joy and peace so that hope overflows. Use this verse to ask God for more hope, not as something you manufacture, but as something he gives through the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
(WEB)
This verse calls God your refuge and strength when the ground seems to shift. Pray it slowly, letting the words remind you that you do not have to stand on your own strength today.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Written by someone surrounded by ruin, these lines still insist that God’s mercies are new every morning. Pray them when yesterday felt heavy and you need to believe that today can start fresh.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
Isaiah promises renewed strength to those who wait on the Lord. Pray this when you feel worn out, asking God to lift you up in the waiting rather than only after it ends.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this first thing in the morning, before your phone demands your attention, or late at night when the worries are loudest. Sit somewhere quiet, such as the edge of your bed or a chair by a window, and let your hands rest open in your lap. Opening your hands is a simple way to say that you are setting down what you have been gripping. If you need to, read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence.
You can also pray this with someone else. Ask a friend, a spouse, or someone from your church to read it with you, or to pray it over you while you listen. Hope often grows when we are not carrying it alone, and hearing another voice speak these words can help when your own voice feels too weak to say them.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord be near to you in the days ahead, and may he fill you with a hope that does not depend on your circumstances. May you feel his steady presence in the quiet moments and his strength in the hard ones. Let this blessing remind you that you are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.
