This list gives you Bible verses to read after a breakup, when the ending feels heavy and the days feel unsteady. Each entry is paired with a short reflection and one practical way to carry the verse through your day. Use it whenever you need a steadying word, whether the relationship ended last week or several months ago.

The verses here share a common thread: God is near to the brokenhearted, He holds our grief in view, and healing is something He does over time rather than all at once. You do not have to feel whole before you can receive these words.

Verses for the Quiet Hours Alone

The hardest moments after a breakup often come at night or in the empty spaces of an ordinary day. These verses speak to the loneliness that settles in when the house is quiet and the phone stays silent.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

When you are sitting alone on the edge of the bed, this verse reminds you that the Lord draws close to people whose hearts are cracked open. Try saying the first line aloud before you turn off the light.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Grief after a relationship ends can feel like a wound that will never close. This verse names God as the One who binds up and heals. Let it be the thing you hold onto when the sadness rises during your commute.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Exhaustion from crying and replaying conversations is real. Jesus invites the weary to come to Him for rest. Consider taking a few minutes of silence in the afternoon and simply bringing Him your tiredness without trying to explain it.

Verses for Facing the Mirror and the Future

Once the initial shock fades, many people struggle with their own sense of worth and what comes next. These verses address identity, self-doubt, and the uncertainty of starting again.

Psalm 139:14

I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

A breakup can leave you feeling rejected or unlovable. This psalm declares that you are wonderfully made, regardless of how another person responded to you. Write the phrase on a sticky note and place it on your bathroom mirror.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Replaying the past can keep you stuck in the same painful loop. God invites His people to look for something new. Try naming one small new thing this week, such as a walk you have never taken or a meal you have wanted to cook.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Fear of being alone forever can creep in after a loss. Paul lists the things that cannot separate you from God’s love, and a failed relationship is not on that list. Repeat these verses slowly during a moment of anxiety.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Some mornings you will wake up dreading the day. These verses remind you that God’s compassions are renewed every morning. Let this be the first thought you give to the day, before your phone or your worries claim your attention.

Verses for Forgiveness and Letting Go

Anger, bitterness, and the wish for things to be different can take up a great deal of space after a breakup. These verses point toward releasing what you cannot control and trusting God with justice and healing.

Ephesians 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Resentment toward a former partner can harden into something heavy. Paul calls believers to put away bitterness and to be kind and forgiving. You might write down one specific hurt and then pray for the willingness to release it.

Romans 12:19

Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

(WEB)

Wanting the other person to feel what you felt is a natural reaction. This verse invites you to leave vengeance in God’s hands. When the urge to send a angry message comes, pause and pray instead.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul speaks of forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward the goal ahead. After a breakup, this can mean choosing one small step forward each day, even when the past keeps pulling at you.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Carrying the weight of a broken relationship is tiring and often isolating. The psalmist invites us to cast our burdens on the Lord, who will sustain us. Try writing your burden on paper and then physically setting it down while you pray.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

There will be days when you feel afraid of what comes next. God’s promise to be with you and strengthen you speaks directly to that fear. Read it before a difficult conversation, a family gathering, or a return to a shared place.

Verses for Hope and Renewal

Healing rarely arrives in a straight line, but these verses look ahead with confidence in God’s faithfulness. They encourage you to trust that the story is not finished and that restoration is possible.

Revelation 21:5

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

(WEB)

God declares that He makes all things new. Even if your relationship cannot be restored, He is still at work in your life. Let this verse become a quiet affirmation you whisper when you feel stuck.

Joel 2:25

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you.

(WEB)

The prophet speaks of God restoring years that seemed lost. Many people feel they have wasted time on a relationship that ended. This verse offers the hope that God can redeem those seasons. Consider journaling what you believe He might restore.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God’s plans for His people are described as good and full of hope, spoken to exiles in a time of loss. Read this verse when you are tempted to believe your future is closed off, and ask God to show you the next step.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Paul writes that although the outer self wastes away, the inner self is renewed day by day. Healing from heartbreak is often slow and mostly invisible. Notice one small sign of inner growth at the end of each day.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that speak most clearly to where you are right now. Write them on index cards and keep one in your wallet, one by your bed, and one on the dashboard of your car. Reading them in the places where you feel the loss most can turn those moments into small pauses for prayer.

Read the verses aloud rather than only in your head, and read them again on hard days. Pray the verse back to God in your own words, asking Him to help you believe it. Some people find it helpful to revisit this list every few weeks and notice which verses have begun to feel lighter.

A Short Prayer for after a breakup

Lord, I come to You with a heart that feels bruised and tired. The relationship has ended, and I am not sure how to hold the pieces of what I hoped would be. Thank You that You are close to me in this grief and that You do not turn away from broken things. Help me to rest in Your presence today, even when my thoughts keep returning to what I lost. Teach me to release what I cannot control and to trust You with the days ahead. Renew my mind and my hope, one morning at a time. Amen.
