This list gives you Bible verses to read when you have lain awake and the morning finds you tired, anxious or simply worn thin. It is for anyone who has watched the clock move through the small hours and wants words that meet them in that kind of exhaustion. The verses below share a common thread: they speak of a God who does not sleep, who keeps watch, and who invites weary people to bring their restlessness to him rather than carry it alone.

Verses for the Quiet Hours Before Dawn

When you are still awake long after the house has gone quiet, the mind tends to run in circles. These passages turn your attention toward the God who keeps watch over you through the night, so that you are not left to guard yourself.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

The psalmist reminds you that the one watching over you never drifts off. When you feel alone in the dark, try saying the phrase “he does not slumber” slowly, letting it replace the list of worries that keeps you up.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse links peace with lying down, which is a comfort when sleep refuses to come. Before you get up the next day, name one thing you are willing to leave in God’s hands so you can start the morning without carrying it.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

The verse says God gives sleep to his beloved, which can free you from the pressure to earn rest by forcing yourself to sleep. Try telling yourself, once, that rest is a gift you can receive rather than a test you must pass.

Verses for Anxious Thoughts That Won’t Settle

Sometimes the sleeplessness comes from a worry that will not let go. These verses address the anxious mind directly, pointing toward prayer and trust as the place where those thoughts can be set down.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from worry to prayer in a single breath, and that is the pattern to follow at three in the morning. Write your worries on a piece of paper beside the bed, then turn each one into a short prayer over it.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter tells you to cast your anxieties on God because he cares for you. When a worry keeps returning, picture physically handing it over, the way you might set down a heavy bag at the door.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus says each day has enough trouble of its own, which is a relief when your mind has rushed ahead to tomorrow’s problems. Tonight, decide that the only task left is to rest, and let the rest of the day wait for its own morning.

Verses for Trusting God When You Are Exhausted

Exhaustion can make faith feel thin, and a sleepless night can leave you wondering whether God is still near. These passages speak to the weariness itself and remind you that he gives strength to those who have run out of their own.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes God giving power to the faint and renewing the strength of those who wait on him. On a tired morning, take one small step, such as making tea or opening a window, and treat it as an act of waiting on God for the next part of your day.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and heavy laden to come to him and find rest. Think of one burden you have been trying to carry alone, and say his name over it as you walk through your first errand of the day.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, which can be a comfort when the night has left you raw. If you feel close to tears, let them come in his presence rather than holding them back until you feel more composed.

Verses for Trusting God Through the Long Night

Some nights stretch on with no clear answer and no easy sleep. These final verses hold out hope that the darkness is not the end of the story, and that the morning belongs to God as well.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

(WEB)

The psalm says weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning. When you are still awake, mark the hour you began watching for dawn and remind yourself that the morning is coming regardless of how you feel.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Jeremiah, writing from a ruined city, says God’s mercies are new every morning. Before you reach for your phone at dawn, pause and ask God to show you one fresh mercy in the day ahead, even a small one.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists the things that cannot separate you from God’s love, from death to fear to powers of any kind. On a sleepless night, read the list slowly and name the fears that keep you awake, reminding yourself that none of them can cut you off from him.

How to Use These Verses

Keep this list where you will see it when you wake in the night, whether that is a note on your phone, a card on the nightstand or a page in your Bible with a ribbon marking it. Read one verse at a time rather than the whole set, and let a single passage stay with you until you feel its weight. Writing a verse by hand can slow a racing mind and give your hands something gentle to do.

You can also pray these verses back to God, turning each reference into a request. Say the words of Psalm 4:8 as a prayer for rest, or repeat Philippians 4:6-7 as you name each worry. If you cannot sleep, get up for a few minutes, read a passage aloud, and return to bed when your body begins to feel heavy again.

A Short Prayer for after a sleepless

Lord, I am tired, and my mind will not be still. You know every thought that keeps me awake, and you do not need me to explain them before you hear me. Take the worries I cannot carry tonight and hold them for me. Give me rest where I am restless, and remind me that you keep watch while I sleep. Let the morning bring me strength for what lies ahead, and help me trust you with the day before me. Amen.
