This page gives you comforting Bible verses for the days before a big change, such as a new job, a move, a medical procedure, a marriage, or the birth of a child. Each entry includes a short reflection and one practical way to carry the verse through your day. The verses share a common thread: when the future is unclear, God’s presence and faithfulness do not change, and the Bible repeatedly invites us to bring our anxiety to him rather than carry it alone.

Verses for the Night Before You Begin

The hours before a big change often bring a restless mind and a body that won’t settle. These verses speak to that particular kind of sleeplessness, pointing you to the one who keeps watch when you cannot.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

When you lie awake running through every possible outcome, this verse reminds you that rest is a gift God offers, not a reward you earn by solving everything first. Tonight, before you turn off the light, name one worry aloud and then set it down as an act of trust.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This psalm recognizes that anxious striving does not add a single hour to your life. Choose one task for tomorrow that you can finish, then let the rest wait until morning. Sleep is part of the work God already asks you to do.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

The peace in this verse is kept by a mind fixed on God, not by a mind that has answered every question. Write the phrase “kept in perfect peace” on a card and place it on your nightstand. When your thoughts drift forward, return to it as a prayer.

Verses for Facing the Unknown

Big changes carry real uncertainty about what the next season will require of you. These verses remind you that God knows the path even when you can see only the next step.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Trusting God with your understanding means admitting that you cannot see the whole road. Practically, this looks like writing down the decision you feel sure about and the one you are still unsure of, then praying over both lists by name.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

God speaks here to a people facing rivers and fire, and the promise is his presence within the trial, not an absence of trial. As you prepare for a difficult transition, picture yourself walking through that water with him beside you and speak that picture into your prayers.

Deuteronomy 31:8

The LORD himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.”

(WEB)

Moses spoke these words to Israel just before they entered a land they had never seen. Before your own new season, take a few minutes to list the places you feel you will be going alone, and say over each one that the Lord goes before you.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua was given courage not because the task was small but because God was with him wherever he went. When fear rises about a coming change, repeat the phrase “the Lord your God is with you” aloud, slowly, as you walk into your day.

Verses for Trusting God With Your Plans

Many big changes come with plans that may not unfold the way you hoped. These verses invite you to hold your plans with open hands, trusting the One who directs your steps.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

This promise came to exiles who had lost almost everything familiar. It does not promise an easy road, but it does place your future in God’s hands. Remind yourself of this whenever a plan falls through, by writing one hope for the coming season and dating it.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

Committing your way to the Lord is an ongoing act, not a single decision made once. Each morning before a big change, name the specific step you are handing over that day, whether a conversation, a form, or a flight.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and thanksgiving, not with a guarantee that every request will be granted. Try writing three requests and three thanks before a major transition, so that gratitude sits alongside the worry rather than being crowded out by it.

Verses for Gaining Courage in the Middle of the Change

Once the change has begun, courage is often needed more than peace. These verses encourage you to keep moving forward, one faithful day at a time.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus tells us not to borrow tomorrow’s trouble, which is especially useful in the middle of a transition with many unknowns. Each evening, write down what today required of you and set aside tomorrow’s worries until the morning.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul does not say that every change will feel good, only that God works within all things for the good of those who love him. When a decision seems costly, ask God to show you one way this season might be shaping you for good.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul learned that God’s grace is enough even when weakness is most visible, which is often how a big change feels. Let this verse guide you to admit where you feel weak and ask for grace in that very spot, rather than trying to hide it.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David names the Lord as the light and stronghold of his life, language that steadies anyone facing a new season. Read this verse aloud once in the morning and once before bed, pausing on the words “the Lord is my light.”

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses from this list that speak most directly to your situation, and write them on paper you will see each day, such as a bathroom mirror, a car visor, or the first page of a notebook you carry with you. Reading the same verses repeatedly helps them move from something you have seen to something you believe.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn each one into a sentence addressed to God, such as “Lord, you are with me in this,” and speak it before you start your day or before a difficult conversation. Over the weeks ahead, return to the verses that stayed with you and let them shape how you pray through the change.

A Short Prayer for Before a Big Change

Lord, you know the road ahead of me better than I do, and you have already gone before me into every place I fear. Quiet my restless thoughts and help me rest in your faithfulness tonight. When tomorrow brings decisions I cannot yet see clearly, give me wisdom to take the next faithful step and courage to take it without fear. Keep me close to you through every hard hour, and let me find your peace in the middle of the change. Amen.
