This list gives you Bible verses to read when a major change is close, whether it is a new job, a move, a diagnosis, a wedding, a new baby, or the end of something familiar. It is for anyone whose stomach tightens when they think about what is coming. Each verse is paired with a short reflection and one practical way to carry it through the day.

The verses below share a common thread: they remind you that God goes ahead of you, stays with you while you wait, and gives strength for the step in front of you rather than the whole road at once.

Verses for the Night Before Something Big

When sleep feels impossible and your mind keeps rehearsing what might go wrong, these verses slow the noise down. They are meant to be read in bed or in the quiet before you set your alarm, not as a test of how calm you should feel.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Before a big change, your thoughts tend to race ahead to every possible outcome. This verse invites you to stop, breathe, and remember who is in control. Tonight, try sitting still for sixty seconds with your phone face down and simply say the word “still” to yourself.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly here to someone who is anxious and unsure. The promise is not that the change will be easy, but that you will not face it alone. Write the first half of this verse on a sticky note and place it where you will see it at breakfast.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David wrote this in a moment of real danger, which makes it honest about fear. The verse does not pretend you will never be afraid; it shows what to do with fear. When a wave of worry hits, speak this sentence aloud as a short prayer.

Verses for Trusting God With the Unknown

Major changes often come with questions no one can answer yet. These verses help you hold the unknown open-handed, trusting the One who already knows how the story ends.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Leaning on your own understanding is natural when the path is unclear, but this passage points you to a different source of direction. Before you make the next decision, pause and ask God what He thinks, then take one small step that matches what you sense.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

These words were spoken to exiles who had lost almost everything familiar. They reveal that God’s plans run deeper than any single season. When the future feels blurry, remind yourself of this promise each time you check your calendar.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

This verse uses images of rivers and fire, things that feel overwhelming, and promises God’s presence within them. It speaks to the reality that change can feel like passing through deep water. Name one specific worry out loud and place it in God’s hands today.

Verses for Strength When You Feel Small

Sometimes a big change exposes how little you feel you have to offer. These verses remind you that strength in God’s economy often grows out of weakness, not confidence in yourself.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul heard God say that grace is enough, and that power is made perfect in weakness. If you feel unprepared for what lies ahead, this is good news. Tomorrow, admit one specific area where you feel weak and ask for grace for that exact moment.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Paul wrote this from prison, showing that his contentment came from Christ rather than his circumstances. This verse is not a guarantee that everything will go your way, but a reminder that Christ supplies what you lack. Repeat it before you walk into the room where the change will be announced.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God gave this command to Joshua as he stepped into leadership after Moses. The repeated call to be strong and courageous is grounded in the promise that the Lord is with him. Write the phrase “the Lord your God is with you” on the inside cover of your journal.

Verses for Patience in the Waiting

Many changes involve long stretches of waiting between the decision and the arrival. These verses help you wait well, trusting that God is working even when nothing visible seems to move.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

The prophet describes renewal for those who wait on the Lord, a picture of strength that does not run out. When you are tired of waiting, shift your focus from the outcome to the Lord himself. Spend five minutes today in quiet worship before checking your email.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written in grief, these verses still hold hope because God’s faithfulness is renewed every morning. A big change can make each day feel uncertain, yet His mercy meets you again at sunrise. Each morning this week, thank God for one specific mercy before your feet touch the floor.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God works all things together for good for those who love Him. This does not mean every event is good, but that God is able to weave even hard changes into a larger purpose. When you feel stuck, ask God where He might already be at work.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that speak most clearly to your situation rather than trying to read all fifteen at once. Write them on cards or in a notes app, and keep them where you naturally pause, such as your nightstand, car dashboard, or bathroom mirror. Reading one verse slowly is more helpful than skimming many.

Return to the same verses for several days so they have time to settle into your memory. Pray them back to God in your own words, and notice how your fears shift as the words become familiar. Share your favorite verse with a trusted friend who can pray with you through the transition.

A Short Prayer for Before a Big Change

Lord, you see the road ahead even when I cannot. I bring you the things that frighten me about what is coming, and I ask you to meet me in each one. Give me the courage to take the next faithful step and the patience to wait when waiting is what you require. Remind me that you have not left me, and that your plans for me are good even when I cannot see how. Hold me steady through every unknown, and help me rest in your presence. Amen.
