This list gives you Bible passages to read at the close of the day, when the work is finished or abandoned and your mind will not quiet down. It is for anyone who goes to bed carrying unresolved worries, unspoken regrets, or simply the weight of a long day. Each passage points toward God as the one who keeps watch while you sleep.

These verses share a common movement: they bring the day’s burdens into God’s presence and leave them there. Some name God as protector, some invite you to rest, and some call you to give thanks before turning out the light. Read them slowly, one at a time, rather than all at once.

Verses for Releasing the Day’s Worries

Many people lie awake replaying conversations, deadlines and decisions. These passages do not pretend those things are small. They offer a way to hand them over, trusting that God sees what you cannot fix tonight.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

David writes about pressing trouble, yet he tells the reader to hand the weight to the Lord. Tonight, name the one thing that keeps circling in your mind, and say it aloud in prayer as a thing you are setting down.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter links anxiety with God’s care in a single breath. Before you sleep, write your worries on a card, place it on the nightstand, and let the card stand for your decision to trust God with them.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to the tired and burdened, not to the composed and capable. At the end of a draining day, picture yourself setting a heavy bag down at his feet and allowing yourself to stop carrying it.

Verses for Rest and a Quiet Mind

Sleep often comes harder than it should, even when the body is worn out. These verses speak of rest as a gift from God rather than a reward you must earn by finishing everything first.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

The psalmist claims peace in the act of lying down, not after a perfect day. Try reading this verse with your eyes closed and let the words slow your breathing before you move on to anything else.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This psalm reminds you that the world does not depend on your constant effort. When you feel you must stay awake to keep everything running, let this verse remind you that God gives sleep to those he loves.

Mark 4:39

He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

(WEB)

In the boat during the storm, Jesus is asleep while the disciples panic. At night, when your thoughts feel like a storm, picture Jesus present in the same boat, and speak a short prayer asking him to calm what is churning in you.

Verses for Giving Thanks Before Sleep

Gratitude can shift the focus of a tired mind from what went wrong to what was given. These passages invite you to name the good things of the day before God, even small ones.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Jeremiah writes these words from ruins, yet he finds reason to hope in God’s mercy, which begins again each morning. Tonight, list three things from today that show God’s kindness, however ordinary they seem.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Paul says to give thanks in all circumstances, which includes the hard ones. Before you turn off the lamp, thank God for one thing from today even if the day as a whole felt like a loss.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

This verse frames the whole day as something God has made, which means it belongs to him. As you close it out, offer the day back to God and thank him for the time he gave you in it.

Verses for Trusting God Through the Night

Night can feel lonely or frightening, especially when the next morning holds uncertainty. These verses speak of God’s watchfulness and faithfulness through the dark hours.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

The psalm declares that the one who guards Israel does not sleep. When you cannot sleep, let this verse remind you that you are not the only one awake, because God keeps watch over you.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

David writes this while surrounded by enemies, yet he says he slept and woke again. Use this verse as a bedtime prayer, asking God to sustain you through the night and bring you safely into morning.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

The prophet links peace with a mind fixed on God. As you settle in, choose one simple thought about God’s character, such as his faithfulness, and let your mind return to it whenever it wanders.

Psalm 16:8

I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

(WEB)

Keeping the Lord before you is a steady posture, and it suits the close of the day. Before sleep, speak his name slowly and tell him you are placing yourself under his care for the night.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus gives peace in a different way from the world, and his words were spoken to troubled disciples. Read this verse last thing at night and receive it as a gift meant for your heart as you go to sleep.

How to Use These Verses at Night

Keep this list where you will see it at bedtime, such as on a phone note, a bookmark or a card by the bed. Read one passage each night rather than all fifteen, and return to the same verse for a week if it speaks to you. Repetition helps the words settle into memory when you are too tired to search for them.

Pair the reading with a simple habit: turn off screens, read the verse aloud, then pray the reflection in your own words. If the mind keeps racing, say the verse slowly again. There is no need to finish a long devotion. A single verse held in quiet is enough.

A Short Prayer for the End of the Day

Lord, you have carried me through this day, even in the moments I did not notice you there. I bring you what is left undone and the things I could not manage well, and I ask you to take them from my hands. Forgive me where I fell short, and help me rest in the grace you give each morning.

Calm my thoughts and keep watch over the people I love while I sleep. Give me the sleep you give to those you love, and wake me in your mercy tomorrow. Thank you for this day, for the small kindnesses and the hard lessons alike. Amen.
