When you need courage, these Bible verses give you words of strength to hold onto before a difficult conversation, a frightening diagnosis, or a day that feels too heavy to face. Each verse points you away from your own resources and toward a God who promises to be present. Read them slowly, and let them speak to the specific fear in front of you.

Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Day

Some fear arrives before you have even got out of bed. These verses speak to the anxious start of a day, when the list of things to face feels longer than your energy. They remind you that courage is not the absence of fear but the company of someone stronger than it.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua received this command as he stood on the edge of a land he had never entered. Before your hard day begins, say the last phrase out loud, and then name the one task you dread most. The promise is that the same God who went before Joshua is already going ahead of you.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David calls the Lord his light and his salvation, which means fear has no final authority over him. Try writing the opening words on a sticky note and placing it where you will see it while you brush your teeth or start the coffee. Let it be the first thing you look at when dread begins to rise.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks to a frightened people with three promises in a row: I am with you, I am your God, I will strengthen you. Notice how the verse moves from presence to help. In the car on the way to work, pause at a red light and repeat “I am with you” until the words feel more true than the worry.

Verses for Facing Something You Dread

Courage is often needed for a specific encounter: a phone call you have put off, a doctor’s appointment, a confrontation you know is coming. These verses are for the moment when the thing itself is in front of you and you are tempted to turn back.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses speaks these words to Israel as they prepare to cross into territory full of enemies. The repeated call to be strong and courageous is grounded in the fact that the Lord goes with them. Before you step into the difficult room, tell yourself that you are not walking in alone, and then walk in.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul reminds a young and timid Timothy that God has given a spirit of power, love, and self-control rather than fear. Notice that courage here is linked with love and a clear mind. When you feel the pull to freeze, ask which of those three you most need today, and pray for that one first.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David writes this in a dangerous season, and he chooses to say “when I am afraid” rather than pretending he is not. The verse does not deny the fear; it places trust right next to it. If you have a particular fear this week, speak it aloud to God in plain words, then say the word “trust” as a deliberate act of the will.

Verses for Long Seasons of Weariness

Some courage is not a single decision but a steady refusal to give up over months or years. These verses speak to the quiet endurance of caregivers, students, parents, and anyone who is tired of being brave.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes to believers who are tempted to quit doing good because the results are slow. The promise of a harvest at the proper time gives weary people a reason to keep going. Choose one small act of faithfulness you can repeat tomorrow, and offer it to God as an ordinary act of courage.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes strength that comes from waiting on the Lord, not from our own reserves. The image of wings, running, and walking shows that God meets us at every pace we can manage. When you feel depleted, rest for five minutes, breathe slowly, and ask God to renew what you cannot renew on your own.

Romans 8:31

What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

(WEB)

Paul asks a question that does not expect a doubtful answer: if God is for us, who can be against us? This verse helps you see your situation through the lens of God’s commitment to you. Write the question at the top of a page in your journal, and answer it honestly each evening.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses you need most on index cards or in the notes app on your phone, so they are with you when fear arrives without warning. Choose two or three at a time rather than trying to memorize the whole list. Keep them in the places where stress usually strikes, such as your car, your desk, or the bathroom mirror.

Pray the verses back to God rather than only reading them. Turn “I am with you” into “Lord, be with me in this conversation,” or “Do not fear” into “Lord, help me not to fear this particular outcome.” Praying the words makes them personal, and it gives courage a direct address.

A Short Prayer for when you need courage

Lord, you know the specific fear I am carrying today, and you know the places in me where courage feels thin. I do not ask you to remove every difficulty, but I ask you to go before me and stand beside me. Give me the steadiness to take the next faithful step, even when my hands are shaking. Remind me of your presence when my mind races toward worst-case scenarios. Let your strength be enough for the hour ahead, and let me rest in your faithfulness. Amen.
