This list gives you Bible verses to read when you need forgiveness, whether you are asking God to pardon something you did or working up the willingness to release someone who hurt you. Each verse is grouped by the moment it tends to fit, with a short reflection and one practical way to carry it through the day. The verses share a common thread: forgiveness begins with God’s own mercy toward us, and that mercy shapes how we receive it and how we extend it.

Verses for Asking God to Forgive You

Sometimes the hardest prayer is the honest one, when you know you were wrong and feel reluctant to say so. The verses in this group speak to the moment after you have seen your own failure and are ready to bring it into the light.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

John connects confession with forgiveness in a single breath. Tonight, name the specific thing you did, say it aloud or write it down, and then receive the pardon the verse promises rather than waiting to feel worthy of it.

Psalm 51:1

Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

(WEB)

David begins his prayer of repentance by appealing to God’s steadfast love, not to his own record. When shame makes you want to hide, borrow his opening and ask for mercy before you try to explain yourself.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

The psalmist uses the distance between east and west to describe how far God removes our sins. Keep this verse near when old failures keep resurfacing, and remind yourself that God has already let them go.

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(WEB)

God invites a conversation rather than issuing a verdict in this passage. Picture the exchange yourself: bring the stain you carry and let God answer it, then notice what the reply actually is.

Verses for Releasing Someone Who Hurt You

Forgiving another person can feel like giving up a rightful claim to fairness. The verses here address the ache of being wronged and the quiet work of letting go of resentment, even when the other person has not apologized.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul ties our forgiveness of others directly to the forgiveness God has shown us in Christ. When you feel the urge to replay an offense, recall a specific kindness you have received and let it set the standard for your response.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

This verse asks for patience with complaints and a willingness to bear with others, as the Lord has borne with you. Try naming the grievance plainly to yourself, then decide consciously to release the debt the way God has released yours.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Jesus presents forgiveness as woven into the way we pray, not as an optional extra. Before you finish your prayers today, speak the name of the person you are struggling to forgive and ask God to help you mean it.

Luke 6:27-28

27 “But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.

(WEB)

These words move beyond forgiveness into blessing those who wrong us. You do not have to feel warmth to obey; begin with one small act of prayer for the person, even if it is only a request that God would deal with your own heart.

Verses for Days When Guilt Keeps Returning

Even after forgiveness is received, guilt can return in the quiet hours or during a stressful week. These verses help you answer that voice with the settled truth that God has already acted.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

(WEB)

Paul declares that those who belong to Christ face no condemnation. When the accusation comes back, say the verse out loud and remind yourself that the verdict has already been delivered.

Micah 7:19

He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

(WEB)

Micah pictures God hurling sins into the depths of the sea, out of reach and out of sight. If you keep retrieving an old mistake, imagine it sinking and ask God to help you leave it there.

Hebrews 8:12

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more.”

(WEB)

The writer quotes God’s promise to remember sins no more. Tonight, consider that God is the one who chooses what to remember, and let that gentle truth loosen your grip on the past.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written in the middle of a painful exile, these lines insist that God’s mercies are new each morning. Read them when yesterday’s failure feels heavier than today’s grace, and begin the day with that fresh mercy in view.

Psalm 130:3-4

3 If you, Yah, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared.

(WEB)

The psalmist asks a searching question and then answers it with the reassurance that forgiveness is with God. Use this passage in a moment of reflection, letting the question and the answer sit side by side before you continue your day.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses you need on a card, in the notes app on your phone, or on the inside cover of a journal, and place them where you will see them during a hard moment. Choose one or two at a time rather than trying to memorize the whole list, and return to the same ones over several days so their truth can settle in.

Read them in sequence when you pray, first confessing what is true, then receiving God’s answer, and finally asking for help to extend the same mercy. Speaking the words aloud, even softly, tends to make them easier to believe than reading silently.

A Short Prayer for when you need forgiveness

Lord, you know the things I wish I could undo and the wounds I carry from what others have done to me. I bring you my failures without excuses and ask for the mercy you promise to all who come to you honestly. Remind me that your forgiveness is not measured by how well I feel about myself, and help me release the people who have hurt me into your hands. Teach me to receive your grace each morning and to offer the same grace to others. Amen.
