This prayer is for the days a church gathers away from home for a retreat, when a group of believers leaves the usual routines behind to seek God together. Pray it at the start of the retreat, during the first evening together, or whenever the group pauses to ask God to bless what is happening. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Blessings for a Church Retreat
Lord, thank you for calling us out of our ordinary weeks and bringing us to this place together. Many of us arrived tired, carrying work deadlines, family worries, and the quiet questions we have not yet said out loud. Meet us here. Slow our hurried hearts and help us notice that you have been present in every mile of the drive and every unpacked bag.
Bless the leaders who planned these days, the cooks who will feed us, and the volunteers who will carry the chairs, the bags, and the late-night tasks no one sees. Give them strength that does not run out by Sunday. Bless the friendships that will form across ages and backgrounds, and help us listen to one another without rushing to fix or judge. Where there is loneliness among us, draw near to that person in a way only you can. Where there is grief, let it be held gently by people who love them.
Open our minds to whatever you want to teach us this weekend, and give us the humility to receive it. Let the words we hear and the songs we sing settle into the places that need them most. Send us home changed in small ways we can recognize, and keep us connected to one another long after the retreat ends. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, bless this retreat and the people gathered here. Be with the leaders, the cooks, and the quiet helpers behind the scenes. Open our hearts to hear you and to love one another well. Help us rest in your presence and carry what we learn back home. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 133:1
See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!
(WEB)
Pray this verse over the friendships forming during the retreat. Ask God to make the group a place where brothers and sisters in Christ live together in real unity, not just politeness, and to let the shared days deepen the trust already among you.
Romans 12:10
In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask that the people in your group would honor one another in small, everyday ways: at meals, in conversation, and in patience during the tired hours. Pray that the love you show each other would be steady and generous.
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
(WEB)
Speak this verse slowly as you sit together. Ask God to quiet the noise in each person’s mind so that everyone can stop striving and recognize who God is. Let the stillness of the place become an invitation to listen.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
Pray this for the leaders and the weary volunteers who have given so much to prepare these days. Ask God to renew their strength and to let them rest in his faithfulness, not only their own effort, so they can serve without burning out.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Bring this passage into the worries you carried to the retreat. Pray that each person would hand over their anxieties to God in prayer and receive a peace that steadies the heart, even when the schedule feels full or the future feels uncertain.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray the main prayer at the first gathering, ideally before the group eats or heads to its first session. Stand or sit in a circle if you can, so people can see each other’s faces. If the leader prefers, let one person read the prayer aloud while everyone else listens, then close with a moment of silence where each person can add a private request.
Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a cup of coffee, a Bible, or a small card with the names of people in the group. Holding something concrete helps the mind stay with the words. Invite others to pray the shorter version during meals or in the car rides between sessions, so the blessing continues beyond the first night.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless you and keep you during these days together. May he make his face shine on you and give you peace that goes beyond what you can understand. May the people beside you become a true gift, and may you return home knowing you were never alone.
