These prayers are written for families preparing to travel together, whether you are packing a car for a road trip, boarding a plane to see relatives, or settling into a rented cabin for a week away. Pray them before you leave, in the car on the way, or in the quiet of the first evening once everyone is unpacked. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and put your own family’s names and worries into the words.

Prayers for a Family Vacation

Lord, thank you for this time away together. Many of us have been looking forward to it for months, and some of us are tired from the work of getting ready: the lists, the bags, the money we set aside, the arguments about what to pack. Be with us in the travel itself. Keep us safe on the roads, in the airports, and on the water or the trails. Watch over the driver and the ones who sleep in the back seat, and give patience to the parent who is counting heads at every gate.

Father, we also ask for a gentle spirit between us. Vacations can bring out frustration when plans fall apart, when the weather turns, or when someone is homesick or bored. Help each of us to be generous with one another. Let the younger ones feel seen and the older ones feel rested. Where someone is hurting or anxious, make us quick to notice and slow to judge. Let us laugh more than we complain, and let the time we spend together do us good.

Above all, we ask that you would meet us here. Show us something new in your world while we are away from our ordinary routines. Remind us that our family belongs to you whether we are at home or a thousand miles from it. Bring us all home again with hearts a little more thankful and a little closer to one another. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are heading out together and we need you with us. Keep us safe on every road and in every place we go. Help us be kind to each other when we are tired or hungry or lost. Let this trip give us good memories and bring us back home glad to be a family. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over each person as they leave the driveway and walk through the airport gate. It reminds you that God keeps watch over every coming and going, not only the big moments but the ordinary ones of the trip.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Read this slowly when someone in the family is afraid of the drive, the flight, or the unfamiliar place. Pray that each of you would feel God’s presence beside you as you go.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when plans go wrong or the budget feels tight. Pray that worry would be handed to God in prayer, and that his peace would guard your hearts and minds as you adjust together.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When the itinerary changes or you are unsure which road to take, pray this passage together. Ask God to direct your steps, especially when the map and your own plans disagree.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this over the family’s relationships during the trip. Ask for compassion, patience, and forgiveness, so that small irritations in the car or at the table do not spoil the time together.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version in the car before the engine starts, with everyone buckled in and the bags stowed. Hold hands in the back seat if you can reach each other, or simply pause with your eyes closed for a few breaths. Naming each person aloud helps younger children feel included, and it gives the adults a moment to set down their checklists.

On the first evening, once you have reached your destination, gather in the kitchen or on the porch and read the shorter prayer together. Invite each family member to add one thing they are thankful for or one worry they want God to hold. This turns a travel prayer into a habit of gratitude that can carry through the rest of the week.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your family on every road and keep each of you safe in every place you rest. May he give patience to the weary, joy to the young, and peace to every heart as you travel together. May you return home closer, refreshed, and grateful for one another.
