This page offers a written prayer for a farewell gathering, the kind of send-off held when someone is leaving a job, a church, a town, or a season of life. You can pray it aloud as written at the start of the event, in a quiet moment before it begins, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in place of ours.
Prayers for a Farewell Gathering
Lord, thank you for the people gathered here tonight and for the time we have shared. Some of us have worked beside this person for years, some have prayed with them, and some have simply waited in line for their coffee and felt glad to see them there. Be present in this room. Let the stories told tonight carry the truth of who this person has been to us, and let no one leave feeling that their part went unnoticed.
We also ask for honesty in our hearts. Partings can stir up grief, relief, fear, and pride all at once. Help us to say what is true without drama, to laugh where laughter is needed, and to be quiet where words would get in the way. For the one leaving, we ask for courage about what comes next, for peace in the unknowns, and for friends in the new place who will show them kindness. Go before them and walk with them into every door that opens.
And for those of us who stay, give us grace to keep in touch, to pray without forgetting, and to trust that the bonds formed here do not end at the parking lot. Hold us all in your hands, and let this gathering end with gratitude and hope. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, thank you for this person and the good you have done through them here. Be with them as they go, and be with us as we say goodbye. Give us words that are kind and true, and hearts that are glad even where we are sad. Guard them on the road ahead and go with them wherever they are led. Amen.

Pray this blessing over the person leaving, asking God to keep them, to shine his face on them in the new place, and to give them peace as they settle in. It is a good verse to speak aloud as the gathering closes.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

Ruth 1:16-17
16 Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”

Philippians 1:3-6
3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now; 6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
(WEB)
Paul thanks God for his partners in the gospel and trusts that the good work begun among them will be completed. Pray this for the group saying goodbye, giving thanks for shared work and believing God is not finished with any of you.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray the main prayer in the quiet minutes before the gathering, while the room is still empty and the food is still being set out. Standing near the door or the table where the guest of honor will sit can help you focus on the person rather than the schedule. If you have a few minutes with your hands free, you might write the person’s name on a card and place it where you can see it as you pray.
If you are organizing the event, invite one or two other people to pray it aloud during the evening, perhaps the person who worked longest with the leaver and someone who knows them more personally. Sharing the prayer keeps it from feeling like a formality and lets more hearts take part in asking God to go with the one who is leaving.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may his face shine on you wherever you go. May he give you courage for each new day and friends who remind you of who you are. As you leave this place, may you carry with you the love you have given and received here.
