If you are heading to a men’s retreat, these prayers are written to ask God for openness, honesty, and a fresh sense of his presence among the men gathered with you. You can pray the longer prayer before you leave home, in the car on the way, or quietly in your room on the first night. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.
Prayers for a Men’s Retreat
Lord, thank you for making a way for me to step away from the noise of work, the phone, and the daily routine. Some of us came carrying tiredness, some came carrying grief, and some came simply because a friend asked and we did not want to say no. Meet each man here in the place he most needs you. Loosen the guarded parts of me that would rather stay quiet, and give me the courage to be honest about where I am struggling and where I am glad.
Father, let this weekend be more than a set of talks and meals. Speak to the men who are far from you and to those who have walked with you for decades. Help me listen more than I speak, and let my conversations be marked by patience, humility, and real care for the brothers beside me. Keep our families in your hands while we are away, and bring us home with hearts that are steadier, more grateful, and more ready to lead well. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am here, and I am not sure what to say. Quiet my mind and open my ears to what you want to show me this weekend. Help me to be present with the men around me, to speak the truth in love, and to receive encouragement without pulling away. Thank you that you are already at work in this place. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

Retreats can be full of activity, so this verse invites you to pray for stillness. Ask God to slow you down enough to recognize his presence in the middle of the schedule, the conversations, and the unplanned moments.
Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.
(WEB)
Pray this for the brotherhood you are building. Ask God to make the honest conversations of this weekend sharpen you, so that you leave encouraged to keep growing alongside the men who stood with you.
Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask for a willingness to carry someone else’s load. Pray that you would notice the men who are struggling quietly and that you would be the kind of friend who steps in without needing to be asked.
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
Many men arrive at a retreat unsure of what they need from God. Pray this verse to ask for wisdom in the decisions you face, both in the weekend itself and in the weeks that follow when you return home.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
If worry has followed you to the retreat, lay it before God in prayer. Ask him to guard your heart and mind with a peace that does not depend on your circumstances, so that you can be present and at rest.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray the longer version before the retreat begins, ideally in a quiet place where you can speak out loud without being overheard. If you are driving, you can pray the shorter version at a stoplight or before you walk into the lodge. Keep a small notebook nearby so you can jot down anything God brings to mind during the weekend, and return to it when you pray again on the drive home.
A wife, a pastor, or a close friend back home can pray the same words for you while you are away. Ask them to pray for you on the first evening and again on the last morning, so that you feel supported from both sides. If you are leading a small group at the retreat, pray the longer version together before the first session and invite each man to add one sentence of his own.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before each man who walks through the doors of this retreat and walk beside him in every conversation. May he give courage to the one who is ready to speak and patience to the one who is still listening. May he guard the homes these men have left behind and bring every one of them back with a deeper faith and a steadier heart.
