This page offers a written prayer for a new marriage, the early season when two people are learning to share a home, a calendar, a bank account and a life. Pray it in the first months after the wedding, before a hard conversation, or whenever you want to ask God to guard the bond you have made. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Christian Prayers for a New Marriage

Lord, thank you for bringing us together and for the covenant we have made before you and before the people we love. We are new to this, and we know we do not yet understand each other as well as we will in years to come. Teach us to listen more than we speak, to be patient when habits clash, and to forgive quickly when we hurt one another by accident or carelessness. Show us how to share the small decisions, from what we eat to how we spend our evenings, and the larger ones about money, family and work, so that neither of us feels alone in them.

Father, guard our marriage from the quiet things that wear it down: resentment we keep to ourselves, the habit of comparing our home to others, and the temptation to put our own comfort above the good of the other. Give us a gentle tongue and a generous heart. When one of us is tired, steady the other. When one of us is afraid, help the other to notice. Make our home a place of peace for us and for anyone who walks through its door. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are still learning each other, and today we feel the weight of that. Help us slow down and hear what the other is really saying. Soften what is hard in us, and let our words be kind even when we disagree. Keep us close to you and close to each other, one day at a time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that marriage is a new family, not a visit. Ask God to help you give your spouse the first place in your loyalty and decisions, especially when your parents or old friends have a strong opinion.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray this passage with thanks that you no longer walk alone. Ask God to make you a helper to your spouse in hard seasons, and to help you accept help when you need it rather than pretending you are fine.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and pray it as a checklist for your own conduct, not your spouse’s. Name the places where patience or kindness is hardest for you this week, and ask God to work there first.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when a small annoyance is building into a grudge. Ask God to help you forgive as you have been forgiven, and to let that forgiveness come easily in the everyday moments of living together.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this for the decisions you are still making together, from the budget to the future. Ask God to guide both of you, so that you lean on his understanding and not only on your own plans.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as the drive to work, the quiet minutes after dinner, or the last thing before turning out the light. Pray it sitting side by side or holding hands, so that the words are shared and not only spoken across a room. Keep a pen nearby if you like, and write down one line from the prayer that stands out to you each week.

You can also invite a trusted friend, mentor or pastor to pray it with you, or to pray for your marriage on their own. Ask them to check in on you both over the coming months, because newlyweds often find that support from others helps them stay honest and patient with one another.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this marriage with patience, joy and a deep trust that grows over time. May he keep the couple close to one another, give them grace for every disagreement, and make their home a quiet place where others find rest and welcome.
