This prayer is for the start of a new school year, when backpacks are packed, schedules are posted and the house feels full of nervous energy. Pray it on the first morning of term, on the drive to drop-off, or the night before the first day. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for a New School Year

Lord, you know the names of every child who walks through a school door this year, and you know the names of the teachers and parents who will walk alongside them. Thank you for new beginnings. We ask that you go ahead of us into every classroom, hallway and bus line. Settle the nerves of those who are starting somewhere unfamiliar, and give confidence to those who have struggled before and feel afraid of failing again. Help the little ones find their footing and help the older ones find their voice.

Give wisdom to the teachers who will carry a heavy load of planning, grading and patience. Where they are tired, renew them. Where they are discouraged by a difficult student or a hard year, remind them that their work is seen and valued. Be with the parents who lie awake wondering whether their child will be safe, happy and well cared for. Ease their worry, and help them trust the people you have placed around their children. Give each family enough money for supplies, enough time for homework and enough peace to sleep well.

Teach us to learn with humility and to share what we know with generosity. Guard the hearts of every student from cruelty, comparison and loneliness, and help us to be kind to the quiet child at the back of the room. Let this year be a season of growth in mind and character, not only in grades. Thank you for the gift of learning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless this new school year. Go before my child (or my class, or my own studies) and make the way clear. Give calm to the anxious, focus to the distracted and kindness to everyone in the building. Grant patience to the teachers and wisdom to the learners. Thank you that you are with us in every room. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

Pray this for every student and teacher who needs wisdom for a hard subject or a difficult decision. Ask God to give understanding in the lessons, and to make the learning feel like a gift rather than a burden.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Use this verse for a child who feels nervous about a new class, a new school or a new teacher. Ask God to remind them that he goes with them, so they can step into unfamiliar rooms without fear.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this when worry about grades, friendships or the schedule starts to crowd out sleep. Hand each concern to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that steadies the heart.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this for students tempted to coast or for teachers who feel their effort is unnoticed. Ask God to help everyone do their work with sincerity, knowing that their labor matters to him.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This is a fitting verse for the day a child leaves for school or for a parent watching the bus pull away. Ask God to guard every coming and going, from the first day to the last.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as the kitchen table while breakfast is still on the plates, or the car in the school pickup line before the doors open. Keep a copy of the prayer on your phone or on a card in your bag so it is ready when the morning gets hectic. If you are praying for a child, you might rest a hand on their shoulder or hold the backpack strap as you speak.

Invite someone else to pray it with you, such as a spouse, a grandparent or a friend who also has a child or a classroom to think about. Praying together turns a private worry into a shared trust. You might also write the names of teachers and classmates on a sticky note and place it on the fridge, so the prayer keeps going through the week.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every classroom and walk beside you through every long afternoon. May he give you wisdom for what you are learning, courage for what you are facing and joy in the people you are growing with. May your year be full of good questions, honest effort and quiet progress, and may you feel his peace each morning as the school day begins.
