These prayers for engagements are written for couples who have said yes and are now living in the weeks and months between the proposal and the wedding. They can be read aloud as written, or you can use them as a starting point and speak in your own words. Pray them together in the evening, or on your own during a quiet morning, when the plans feel both exciting and overwhelming.

Prayers for Engagements

Lord, thank You for bringing us to this season. We are grateful for the love we have found in each other and for the way You have guided us toward one another. Right now there is so much to think about: the date, the guest list, the budget, the families who each have their own hopes. Some days the list feels longer than our patience. Give us wisdom to decide what matters most and the grace to let the rest go. Keep our hearts soft toward each other when we disagree, and help us remember that we are on the same side.

We also ask You to shape our marriage before it begins. Teach us to be honest with each other about our fears and our expectations. Help us to listen well, to forgive quickly, and to speak kindly even when we are tired. Bless our families as they adjust to this change, and give us patience with the people who love us most and sometimes see things differently. Guard our commitment to each other and our commitment to You, so that whatever comes, we walk into marriage with open hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are excited and a little anxious about what lies ahead. Calm our hearts when the plans feel heavy. Help us choose kindness over being right, and patience over pressure. Bind us together in love and keep us close to You as we prepare to become one. Thank You for this good gift of each other. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God that marriage is His design, and ask Him to help you leave old patterns behind so that you can cleave to your future spouse with full commitment.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to make your partnership a source of strength, so that when one of you stumbles, the other is ready to lift them up.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as a prayer, asking God to produce patience, kindness and humility in both of you during the busy wedding season and beyond.

Colossians 3:14

Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Pray for love that binds everything together, asking God to let your engagement be marked by a steady, growing affection that holds your relationship in unity.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Bring your plans before God in prayer, trusting Him with the decisions that feel uncertain, and asking Him to make your paths straight as you move toward marriage.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many couples find it helpful to pray these words together at a set time each week, perhaps on a walk or over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table. Holding hands while you speak can keep you both focused and remind you that you are praying as a team. If you are apart for work or distance, agree on a time to pray over the phone, and let the prayer carry you across the miles.

Consider also asking a trusted friend, mentor or parent to pray with you or for you. Their perspective and encouragement can be a gift when wedding planning becomes stressful. Keep a small notebook nearby, and write down any concerns or answers you notice as you pray, so that you can give thanks for God’s faithfulness when the day arrives.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you in every season of this engagement. May He give you peace where there is worry, joy where there is busyness, and a deep, patient love that grows stronger with each passing year. May He keep you both close to Him and close to one another.
