If you are looking for short prayers for New Year’s Eve, this page gives you a prayer you can read aloud as it is written, along with a shorter version for a quiet moment and five Scriptures to pray alongside it. The prayers are meant for the last hours of the old year, when you are looking back on what happened and wondering what the next twelve months will hold. Read them at a table, in the car before midnight, or in bed as the house goes quiet. You are also free to use them as a starting point and change the words until they sound like your own.

Short Prayers for New Year’s Eve

Lord, this year is ending, and I am not sure how to feel about it. Some of it was good, and some of it hurt. I remember the days I felt steady and the days I did not, the conversations I wish I had handled differently, and the people I lost touch with or miss now. Thank you for every mercy I can name and for the ones I have already forgotten. Help me look back honestly without living there.

As the year turns, I bring you the things I am carrying into the new one: my worries about money and work, my hopes for my family, the health concerns I have not wanted to say out loud, and the fear that I will fail again in the same places. I do not know what January will bring. You do. Give me enough courage for the next step and enough rest to take it without panic. Keep the people I love in your care, especially those I cannot protect myself.

Make this new year a time of trust rather than of striving. Teach me to start small, to forgive quickly, and to ask for help before I am exhausted. Let the year to come be shaped more by your faithfulness than by my plans. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the year is almost over, and I am tired of holding everything at once. Thank you for being with me through all of it. I give you what I am keeping from the old year and what I am afraid of in the new one. Walk with me into tomorrow, one day at a time, and help me trust that you have already been there. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you look back on a hard year and need to remember that God’s mercy did not run out. Thank him that his compassion has been new every morning, including this one, and ask him to renew your hope for the year ahead.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

This is a good verse for the turning of the year, because it asks God to help us number our days. Pray it as a request for wisdom to spend the coming months well, with attention to what matters most to you and the people you love.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Use these words when the past still feels heavy. Ask God to show you the new thing he is already doing, even if you cannot see it yet, and to help you leave behind what he has finished with.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for a fresh start, asking God to help you let go of what is behind and press forward in what he calls you to. Ask him to keep your eyes on him rather than on your failures.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse is a good closing prayer for the year. Ask the Lord to guard your going out and your coming in, through every month that lies ahead, and thank him that he does not sleep or grow weary.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray on New Year’s Eve before the clock strikes midnight, while the day’s noise has settled. Sit somewhere quiet, with a cup of tea or a notebook nearby. You might write down two or three things you are grateful for from the past year and two or three you are handing to God for the year ahead, then read the prayer slowly and pause after each paragraph.

If you are praying with family or friends, read the prayer aloud together, taking turns with the paragraphs. You could also light a candle, or simply hold hands for a moment before saying amen. Anyone who cannot be present can be remembered by name in the prayer, which often means more to them than you might expect.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who has carried you through this year go before you into the next. May he keep your heart steady, your steps sure, and your home full of peace. May you rest in his faithfulness each morning and find him waiting in every new day ahead.
