This page offers short prayers for the last day of school, written for the morning drop-off, the car ride home, or the quiet minute before the final bell. Read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names and worries into the spaces. It works for students, parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone who is watching a year close.

Short Prayers for the Last Day of School

Lord, this is the last day of the school year, and I am feeling a mix of relief and tiredness and something harder to name. Thank you for the months behind us, for the lessons learned, the friends made, and the hard days that taught us patience. Be with the children and teachers in every classroom today, especially the ones who are worn thin, the ones who are sad to say goodbye, and the ones who are nervous about what comes next.

Father, some of us are carrying grades we are proud of and some are carrying grades we wish were different. Help us remember that our worth does not rise and fall with a report card. Give the students who are anxious about summer, about a new school, or about a home that feels unsteady a sense of your steady presence. Let the last bell sound as a gift and not a burden, and go with each child as they walk out the door. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the year is ending and our hearts are full of noise. Calm us in this moment. Thank you for the people who taught and guided us, and for the ones who will be waiting at home. Keep every student and teacher safe as they go their separate ways for the summer, and help us trust you with the days ahead. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this on the morning of the last day when you feel unsure about what the next grade, the next school, or the summer will hold. Ask God to be the one who makes your paths straight, and let that be enough for today.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Read this slowly while you wait in the pickup line or walk into the building. It is a short promise that God watches over our going out and our coming in, which fits well for a child heading into a long break.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the anxious students and parents in your life. Bring the mix of excitement and worry to God in prayer, and receive the peace he gives in place of the restless thoughts that come with change.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this for the teachers who are running on empty after a long year. Ask God to renew their strength so they can rest well and return to their work with fresh energy when the time comes.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven…

(WEB)

Turn to this verse when the last day brings a sense of an ending. It reminds us that seasons change by God’s design, and that each season, including this one, has its own purpose and its own goodbyes.

How to Pray This Prayer

The best time to pray the main prayer is in the car or at the front door on the final morning, before the day gets busy. Keep a copy on your phone or on the fridge so you can read it aloud together with your child while they eat breakfast. If you are a teacher, you might pray the shorter version during your first quiet minute in the classroom, or say it silently while the students are packing up.

You can also pray it with someone else. Invite a spouse, a friend, or an older child to read one paragraph each. Hold a pen or a bookmark while you pray so your hands have something to do, and afterward write one name on a card to pray for over the summer. Letting the prayer become a small ongoing habit can carry it well past the last bell.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before each student, teacher and family as they step into the summer. May he guard their going out and their coming home, and may they rest in the knowledge that they are known and loved. May the peace of God settle over this last day and carry them into whatever the new season brings.
