This prayer is for the days before and after you begin a new job, when the mix of excitement and nerves can be hard to name. Pray it the morning of your first day, on the drive in, or the night before while you lay out your clothes. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for the Start of a New Job

Father, you know the job I am stepping into better than I do. You know the names I will have to learn, the systems I do not yet understand, and the small moments when I will feel like I am the only one who does not know where things are. Give me a steady mind on the first morning. Let me listen more than I talk, ask questions without shame, and remember that everyone in that building was once new too.

Go before me into every conversation. Help me to be honest about what I know and what I still need to learn. Where I feel the pull to prove myself, quiet that pull and remind me that my worth is not measured by my first week. Give me a generous spirit toward the people who will teach me, and a humble heart when I make mistakes. Let my work be faithful, and let it be done with integrity even when no one is watching.

Watch over the people I will meet, the ones I will lead and the ones who will lead me. Guard my family while I am away, and give me the energy to come home ready to love them well. Thank you for opening this door. Whatever comes next, I trust that you are already there. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am nervous and I am grateful, and I do not know quite what to do with both feelings at once. Steady my breathing and steady my thoughts. Help me to do the next right thing, to ask the next good question, and to trust that you are with me in this room. Keep my heart open and my hands willing. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel out of your depth. God’s command to Joshua came at the start of an unfamiliar task, and you can pray it as a reminder that courage is not the absence of fear but the company of God in it.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage as you enter a workplace full of decisions you cannot yet see clearly. Ask God to guide your steps, and to make your path straight even when the route is still unfamiliar to you.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your daily tasks, especially the routine ones. It invites you to offer your work to the Lord, so that even filing, emailing and small chores become a form of worship.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Let this verse frame your coming and going: the commute, the first day, the evenings after. Ask God to keep watch over each step you take into this new season and each step you take home again.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When the nerves rise up, pray these verses and bring your specific worries to God by name. Paul links prayer with peace, and you can ask for a calm heart that holds steady through uncertainty.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it in the quiet before the day begins, while the house is still and your coffee is still warm. Sit near a window or stand by the door you will walk out of, and hold something in your hands, such as your badge, a pen, or a notebook you plan to bring. Let the physical object remind you that you are carrying this work into God’s hands.

You might also ask a friend, spouse, or mentor to pray it with you or for you. Send them a short text on the morning of your first day, and invite them to pray at the same time. Having someone else lift your new job before God can steady you when your own words run thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every new room and every unfamiliar task. May he give you wisdom for the questions you cannot yet answer and grace for the mistakes you will certainly make. May he bring you home each evening with a grateful heart.
