This list gives you Scripture to read, share or pray at a farewell gathering, whether you are the one leaving, the one staying behind, or the person asked to say a few words. Each verse is paired with a short reflection and a practical way to carry it into the day. These passages share a common thread: they speak of God’s presence when a familiar place or group of people is left behind, and they remind us that endings in God’s hands are never the final word.

Verses for the Person Who Is Leaving

Leaving a job, a church, a town or a team can feel like stepping off a ledge. The verses in this group speak to the uncertainty of the road ahead and the steady presence of God who goes with you.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses spoke these words to Israel as they faced a land they had never entered. Before you walk out the door, read this aloud in the car on the way home. Let it name the fear you are feeling and then answer it with a truth about who goes with you.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God repeats this command to Joshua as he takes over leadership from Moses, a moment of real transition. If your farewell marks a new role for you, write this verse on a card and place it where you will see it on your first morning in the new place.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

The image here is of water and fire, things that feel threatening when we are moving through them. The promise is not that the crossing will be easy but that God will be in it with you. Pray this over the bags you are carrying as you pack up your life.

Verses for Those Who Are Staying Behind

When someone you love is moving on, the room can feel strangely empty even while the cake is still on the table. The passages below speak to grief, to the sense of loss, and to the hope that the bond of community is not severed by distance.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists the powers that might seem to separate us from God’s love, and he ends by saying none of them can. When a friend moves away, distance can feel like a separation. Use this passage as a reminder that the love you share rests on something larger than a zip code.

Philippians 1:3-5

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now…

(WEB)

Paul writes with thankfulness for his partners in the gospel, even while he is separated from them. Think of one specific memory you share with the person leaving, and give thanks for it in the words of this passage before you say goodbye.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

13 But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul addresses grief among believers who were losing loved ones, and he does not tell them that sorrow is wrong. He tells them grief is held within hope. If the goodbye stings, let this passage give you permission to feel the loss while trusting that God holds everyone in his care.

Verses About God Going Before Us

Many farewells are really about trust: trusting that the one who leaves will be cared for, and that the one who stays will not be abandoned by God. These verses point to a Shepherd and a Guide who is already at work in every new place.

Psalm 23:1-4

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

David describes God as a shepherd who leads through valleys as well as green pastures. A farewell is a kind of valley, and this psalm reminds you that the Shepherd is not left behind. Read it slowly on the morning you wake up in an unfamiliar bed.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

This proverb invites trust in the Lord instead of reliance on our own understanding, which is especially useful when the future looks unclear. Before you start a new chapter, write down one decision you are anxious about and place it under this promise.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The psalmist sings of God watching over coming and going, a phrase that fits a farewell perfectly. Say this psalm as a blessing over the person leaving, or pray it for yourself when you drive away from a place you loved.

Verses to Carry Into the Future

Endings are rarely the last thing God does in our lives. The final group offers hope for what comes next, and it encourages both those who leave and those who stay to look ahead with courage and gratitude.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God speaks these words to exiles far from home, people who had lost nearly everything familiar. Jeremiah’s letter reminds us that God’s plans include a future and a hope even when the present feels uprooted. Repeat this verse as you leave the gathering.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Lamentations is a book of mourning, yet in the middle of it sits this reminder that God’s mercies are renewed every morning. A farewell can leave you tired, so let this passage meet you with fresh mercy each day you wake in your new life.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

John’s vision looks forward to a day when God wipes away every tear and death itself is gone. Pray this verse for the friends you are parting from, trusting that the story of your community is held in God’s hands all the way to its completion.

How to Use These Verses

You might write one or two of these verses on a card and tuck it into a farewell card, a gift or a box of belongings. Choose the passage that matches the relationship: a verse about going forth for the one leaving, or a verse about staying close for the one left behind. A handwritten reference is often remembered longer than a speech.

Read a verse aloud in the morning before the gathering and again in the evening afterward. Let one verse become your companion for a week, returning to it when the goodbyes feel heavy. You can also pray the verse back to God in your own words, which turns the passage from information into conversation.

A Short Prayer for a Farewell Gathering

Lord, thank you for the people who have shared this place and this season with me. Some of them are leaving, and I feel the weight of that goodbye. I ask you to go before each one of them into the new road, to be their guide and their strength when the path is unclear. For those of us who remain, help us to hold onto the bond we share and to trust that you are still at work here. Let every farewell point us back to your faithfulness, which does not change from one place to the next. Amen.
