This page gathers Bible verses and short prayers for Mother’s Day, for mothers who are being honored, mothers who are grieving, and children, grandchildren and friends who want to speak something true about the women who raised them. Each passage is paired with a reflection and a practical way to carry it into the day. The verses share a common thread: God sees the people who give themselves quietly, and He is faithful to strengthen them.

Verses for Mothers Carrying a Heavy Load

Mothering is often invisible work: the early mornings, the unanswered questions at bedtime, the worry that follows a child out the door. These verses speak to the tired parent who wonders whether any of it is noticed.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

This verse pictures God as a shepherd who gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close. Tonight, when you are running on empty, picture yourself held that way. Then let one child rest against you for a few minutes without asking anything of yourself.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes to believers who are growing weary of doing good. For a mother, that weariness often shows up in ordinary repetition. Write one small act of faithfulness on a sticky note, such as packing the lunches or reading the same story again, and place it where you will see it.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

The psalmist calls children a heritage from the Lord. On a day when the house feels chaotic, name one thing about your children that you are grateful for and tell God about it before you go to sleep.

Verses for Remembering a Mother Who Has Gone Before

For many people, Mother’s Day brings grief as well as gratitude. The passages in this section are offered for those who miss a mother who has died, or whose relationship with her was difficult or broken.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The Lord is described as near to the brokenhearted. If this day hurts, you do not have to pretend otherwise. Light a candle or visit a favorite place, and say aloud the name of the mother you miss.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

This passage looks ahead to a day when God wipes away every tear and death no longer has the final word. Read it slowly and let it hold the hope that the love you shared is not lost in God’s keeping.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in a book of sorrow, the writer remembers that God’s mercies are new every morning. On a hard morning, you might write these words on the inside of your wrist or on a card in your wallet and return to them when the grief rises.

Verses for a Mother Who Is Seeking Strength

Some mothers are facing illness, financial strain, a child in trouble, or a marriage under pressure. These verses are for the prayers that are hard to put into words.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites believers to bring every worry to God in prayer and promises a peace that guards the heart. Choose one specific worry, name it in prayer, and then set your phone down for five minutes of silence.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God’s words to Israel, “Do not fear,” reach into the anxious places of a mother’s mind. Say the verse out loud while you fold laundry or drive, letting its rhythm settle your breathing.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you do not know what to do next, James encourages you to ask God for wisdom, and he says God gives generously. Write your question on paper, pray it, and then take the next small step you can see.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

The psalmist lifts his eyes to the hills and remembers where his help comes from. When you feel overwhelmed, look up from the screen or the stove and remind yourself where your help is rooted.

Verses for Thanking the Woman Who Raised You

These passages are for the grown child, the stepchild, the foster child, or the friend who wants to say thank you. Each reflection offers a simple way to turn gratitude into words or action.

Proverbs 31:28

Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her…

(WEB)

The proverb describes children who rise up and call their mother blessed. Call or write to your mother this week and tell her one specific thing she did that shaped who you are.

Ephesians 6:2-3

2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: 3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”

(WEB)

Paul quotes the commandment to honor one’s father and mother and connects it to a good life. Honor can be as simple as keeping a promise, showing up for a visit, or asking her opinion on something that matters to her.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, and patience. Think of one trait your mother modeled, and choose one day this week to practice it toward someone else.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

The psalmist praises God for knitting him together in his mother’s womb. If your mother carried you, bore you, or chose you, take a moment to thank God for the way He made you through her.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on a card and place it somewhere your mother, or you, will see it on Mother’s Day morning. A kitchen window, a bathroom mirror, or the dashboard of the car works well. Choosing a physical location turns a passing thought into a daily reminder.

Read the verses aloud rather than silently, especially the prayers and the psalms. Hearing the words in your own voice helps them move from the page into your heart. Pair each reading with a single prayer sentence in your own words, and let that prayer be honest, even if it is short.

A Short Prayer for Mother’s Day

Lord, thank You for the mothers who have loved, carried, and taught us, and for the women who have stepped into that role when no one else could. Thank You for the mothers who are weary right now, and for the mothers who are grieving a child or a mother they miss. Meet each of them with the same tenderness with which You hold the lambs close. Give strength where the load is heavy, comfort where the loss is deep, and gratitude where love has been given freely. Let this day remind us that You see the quiet work of every mother, and that Your faithfulness reaches further than any one of us can see. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord who watches over you, in your coming and going, keep you steady through this day. May you feel loved by the children who call your name and by the God who has never once stopped caring for you. May your rest be deep, your heart be light, and your hands be held by Someone who will not let go. Amen.
