This page gives you Scripture and prayers for thanking, encouraging and honoring a pastor, whether your pastor preached this Sunday, buried a family member, or simply kept showing up for your congregation year after year. The verses below are grouped by the moments when appreciation is hardest to put into words. What they share is a picture of shepherding as faithful, costly work that God sees and rewards.

Verses for Remembering What Pastors Carry

Pastors often carry burdens that never appear in the church bulletin: late-night phone calls, unfinished sermons, and the names of people they pray for by name. These verses remind us that the work is serious, that it belongs to God, and that those who do it are human too.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

This verse links pastoral care with watchfulness and accountability, and it reminds the congregation that pastors keep watch over souls. To carry it through your day, consider one specific way you can make their work lighter this week, such as a meal, a note, or a short prayer offered on their behalf.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

(WEB)

Paul asks the church to respect and esteem those who labor among them and lead them in the Lord. Put this into practice by speaking a sincere word of respect to your pastor after the next service, not as flattery but as a plain recognition of their labor.

Acts 20:28

Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.

(WEB)

Paul speaks to the Ephesian elders about guarding the flock that God obtained with His own blood. Let this shape your view of your pastor’s role: they are entrusted with something precious, and you can honor that trust by praying for their protection and wisdom.

Verses for Encouraging a Pastor in a Hard Season

Ministry can be lonely, especially when sermons feel dry or when conflict fills the church. These verses speak to pastors who are weary, discouraged or uncertain, and they offer a reminder that God strengthens His servants when their own strength runs out.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, because a harvest will come in its season. If your pastor seems tired, tell them specifically what good you have seen come from their ministry, so they have a concrete reason to keep going.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

16 Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory; 18 while we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

(WEB)

Paul writes that even as the outer self wastes away, the inner self is renewed day by day. Pray this over your pastor’s endurance, asking God to renew them inwardly on the days when external pressures feel heavy.

Psalm 46:1-3

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

(WEB)

The psalmist affirms that God is a refuge and strength, present even when the earth seems to give way. Send your pastor a short message with this idea in mind, reminding them that God remains steady beneath every trial they face in leading the church.

Verses for Thanking a Pastor for Faithful Teaching

Much of a pastor’s work is teaching: studying Scripture, preparing messages, and helping people understand what God says. These verses recognize that faithful teaching is a gift to the whole congregation and an act of love for the truth.

2 Timothy 4:2

Preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching.

(WEB)

Paul charges Timothy to preach the word in season and out of season, with patience and careful instruction. When your pastor teaches faithfully, you can thank them by saying which truth from the sermon has stayed with you, so they know their preparation bore fruit.

Nehemiah 8:8

They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

(WEB)

Ezra and the Levites read the law aloud and helped the people understand it. Appreciate your pastor’s clarity by taking one passage from a recent message and reading it again at home, letting their explanation deepen your own understanding.

Ephesians 4:11-12

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…

(WEB)

Paul says Christ gave pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry. Consider how your pastor’s teaching has equipped you for service, and look for one place this week where you can put that equipping into action.

Verses for Honoring a Pastor’s Prayers and Presence

Pastors often stand in the gap for their people, praying in private and showing up in hospital rooms, kitchens and funeral homes. These verses celebrate that quiet ministry of intercession and presence, which congregations sometimes overlook.

Colossians 1:3-4

3 We give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which you have toward all the saints…

(WEB)

Paul writes that he always thanks God when he prays for the Colossians, having heard of their faith and love. Let your pastor know you are grateful for their prayers, and name one burden they have prayed about that God has answered in your life.

James 5:14-16

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

(WEB)

James describes the elders praying over the sick and the power of a righteous person’s prayer. When your pastor visits you or prays with you, take it as a real act of ministry, and thank them for bringing God’s presence into a difficult moment.

Romans 12:12

Rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer…

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. Honor your pastor’s example by joining them in prayer this week, whether for the church, for their family, or for the people they serve.

How to Use These Verses

Write one or two of these verses on a card and place it where you will see it before the next service. Include a short note of thanks alongside it, so your appreciation arrives with Scripture rather than replacing it. Choose a verse that matches what you have actually seen your pastor do, because specific encouragement lands more deeply than general praise.

Read these verses slowly and pray them for your pastor on a regular rhythm, such as Sunday mornings or the day before their sermon preparation. You might pray the same verse for several weeks, letting its words shape your requests. Over time, your prayers will grow more specific and more faithful.

A Short Prayer for Pastor Appreciation

Lord, thank You for the pastors You have given to this church and to the wider body of Christ. Thank You for the hours of study, the patient counseling, the sermons written late at night, and the prayers offered for people whose names they carry. Strengthen them where they are weary, and give them fresh encouragement from Your Word. Guard their families and their hearts, and remind them that their labor is not in vain in You. Help me to honor them with words and actions that reflect Your love. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord bless our pastor and keep them. May He make His face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May He lift His countenance upon them and give them peace, and may their faithful work bear fruit that lasts. Go in His strength, knowing that you are loved and prayed for by this congregation.
