This short prayer is for fathers, whether you are a dad yourself, you are praying for your own father, or you are lifting up a man who carries the weight of raising children. It works well first thing in the morning, before the house wakes up, or at the close of a long day when the quiet finally arrives. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Fathers

Father God, you know the particular tiredness of a man who has been giving himself away all day. You know the worry he carries about money, about his children’s choices, about whether he is getting it right. I bring him to you now, with his hopes and his failures both laid bare. Steady his hands for the work in front of him and soften his heart for the people who love him most. Where he feels he has fallen short, meet him with your mercy and remind him that your grace is bigger than his mistakes.

Give him patience when the children push every limit, and give him courage to say a hard word when it needs saying. Let him model kindness, honesty and faithfulness so that the young ones watching him learn what you are like. When he has no words left, let your Spirit pray through him. Thank you for the gift of fatherhood and for the way you have shown us what a loving father looks like. Keep him close to you today and every day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up this father to you right now. Give him strength for what is in front of him, wisdom for the decisions he must make, and a calm spirit when the day gets loud. Remind him that he is loved, not only for what he does but for who he is in you. Keep his family safe and his heart open to you. Amen.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray for the father’s decisions, that he would trust God more than his own fears and let the Lord direct the path ahead.

Psalm 103:13

Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Lift up the father’s household and his resolve to lead them in faithfulness, that his whole family would choose to serve the Lord together.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many fathers find that the early morning, while coffee is brewing and the house is still quiet, is the easiest time to pray. You might sit at the kitchen table or in the car before work, holding a cup in both hands so your body stays still while your heart speaks. If you are praying for a father who is not with you, write the prayer on a card and keep it in a wallet or on a phone screen so you can return to it during the day.

Consider inviting his children, his spouse or a close friend to pray the prayer with you, each taking a line or a sentence. Praying together turns a private request into a shared burden, and it reminds the father that he is not carrying his family alone. Close by thanking God for one specific thing the father did well this week, however small it seems.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you in all that you carry as a father. May he give you rest when you are weary, grace when you fall short, and joy in the everyday moments that no one else sees. May your children grow up knowing they are deeply loved, and may you know that you are loved even more.
