These prayers are for anyone who leads a team, whether that means a shift supervisor, a project lead, a coach, a ministry team captain or a manager who answers for other people’s work as well as their own. You can pray them in the early morning before a hard day, before a difficult meeting, or in the car before you walk in to lead. Read the main prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Team Leaders

Lord, you know the weight I carry when people look to me for direction. Some days I feel that I am making decisions for a whole group of people, and I am not sure I am wise enough to do it. Give me clear thinking when the plan changes overnight, and give me patience with the person who is struggling to keep up. Help me to notice who is quiet in the room and who has something important to say but has not yet found the courage.

Father, I ask you to guard my heart from pride when things go well and from fear when they do not. Let my team see in me a steady and honest leader, one who admits mistakes and gives credit freely. Show me where I need to listen more than I speak, and where I need to step in with firmness. When someone on my team is hurting, help me to see it before it becomes a crisis. Give me the grace to take responsibility when things fail, and the humility to celebrate others when they succeed. Strengthen my body and mind for the work ahead, and remind me that I am not the one who holds this all together. Thank you that you guide your people, and that you have chosen to guide me through the people I lead. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am leading today and I feel the pressure of it. Give me wisdom for the next decision, patience for the next question, and a calm voice when things go wrong. Help me to see each person on my team as someone you love. Keep my heart honest and my words kind. Lead me, and let my leading point others toward you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When decisions pile up, pray these words slowly and ask God to direct the choice in front of you. Ask him to show you the path rather than trusting only what you can see.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Bring the specific problem you face at work to God and ask him for wisdom in it. Expect him to give it generously, without shame for asking.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Use this passage to check your motives before a meeting or a hard conversation. Ask God to help you look to the interests of your team as well as your own goals.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel that everything depends on you alone. Ask God to build the work with you, so that your effort rests on his help and not only your own strength.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Offer this verse for the people you lead who are carrying heavy burdens. Ask God to show you how to share their loads in practical ways.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many team leaders find it helpful to pray the main prayer early in the day, before the first message is answered or the first meeting begins. Sit somewhere quiet, such as a parked car, an empty office or a corner of the kitchen, and keep a pen nearby. As you pray, note the names of team members who come to mind, and pray for each one by name after the closing word.

You might also pray it together with a fellow leader, a mentor or a trusted friend who knows your work. Ask them to pray the shorter version for you during the day, or to check in with you about how the week is going. Let your hands be busy as you pray, perhaps by writing your team’s needs on a card or by holding a cup of tea, so that your body settles while your mind turns to God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give wisdom to every leader who carries the weight of others today. May he steady their hands, soften their hearts and remind them that their work is seen. May the people they guide grow stronger and more confident because of their faithful care, and may peace rest on every team that walks together under God’s good direction.
