This list gives you Bible verses that speak to the friendships that matter most, the people who know your history, laugh at your jokes, and show up when life falls apart. It is written for anyone who wants Scripture to shape how they love, encourage, forgive, and pray for a best friend. Each verse is paired with a short reflection and one practical way to carry it into an ordinary day. The verses share a common thread: friendship is a gift from God, and it grows through faithfulness, honesty, and sacrificial love.

Verses for Loyalty and Steady Presence

Loyalty is the quiet foundation of a best friendship. These verses describe the kind of faithfulness that stays when things are easy and when they are not, and they invite you to examine your own consistency.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

This verse describes a friend who loves at all times, including the hard seasons nobody posts about. Think of one friend who has been there through a difficult stretch, and send them a message today that says you are still in their corner.

Ruth 1:16-17

16 Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”

(WEB)

Ruth’s words to Naomi are one of the most famous pledges of loyalty in Scripture, spoken when following her meant leaving everything familiar. If your friend is facing a move, a new job, or a painful change, offer a specific form of practical help rather than a general promise.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

The writer observes that two people working together gain more than either could alone, and that the one who falls needs someone to lift them. Notice where your friend is carrying a weight alone, and ask them plainly what you can take off their hands this week.

Verses for Honesty, Encouragement, and Sharpening

The best friends are not only comfortable companions. They tell the truth in love and help each other grow. These verses speak to words that build up and words that correct, and how to tell them apart.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

(WEB)

Iron sharpens iron, and a good friend sharpens your thinking, your character, and your faith. Choose one conversation this week where you ask your friend for honest feedback on something you are working on, and listen without defending yourself.

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to speak only what builds up and gives grace to the hearer. Before you send a message or open your mouth in a tense moment, pause long enough to ask whether your words will strengthen your friend or drain them.

Proverbs 27:6

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

(WEB)

Wounds from a friend who loves you can be more useful than the kisses of someone who only flatters. If you have been avoiding a hard but kind truth, prepare what you want to say, pray over it, and speak it gently and clearly.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Every close friendship will involve a misstep, a forgotten promise, or a careless word. Paul links forgiveness to the forgiveness we have received from Christ, which gives us a way to release the small grievances that quietly build walls. Decide today whether there is an offense you are still holding, and take one step toward letting it go.

Verses for Joy, Prayer, and Carrying One Another

Friendship is meant to be shared in celebration as well as sorrow, and the most meaningful friends bring each other before God. These verses speak to rejoicing together and lifting each other up in prayer.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to share in both joy and grief, which takes attention and humility. When your friend gets good news, celebrate it with real enthusiasm, even if you are also facing something hard.

Philippians 1:3-5

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now…

(WEB)

Paul thanks God whenever he remembers his partners in the gospel, and he prays for them with joy. Set a reminder to pray for your best friend by name this week, and tell them specifically what you are asking God to do.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Bearing one another’s burdens means stepping into the actual weight of someone’s life. Ask your friend what is heaviest for them right now, and offer one concrete help, such as a meal, a ride, or an afternoon of listening.

Proverbs 18:24

A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

(WEB)

The proverb warns that a person with many casual companions may still lack a true friend, while a faithful friend sticks closer than a brother. Consider whether your best friendship is getting the attention it deserves, and make a plan to spend unhurried time together.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks of laying down one’s life for friends, and he calls his disciples his friends. Love of this kind is measured in costly, everyday choices, not only in dramatic moments. Look for one small sacrifice you can make for your friend this week, such as giving up your evening to sit with them.

How to Use These Verses

Write one or two of these verses on a card or a note on your phone, and keep it where you will see it before a conversation with your friend. Reading a verse before you talk, text, or pray tends to shift your tone from reaction toward care. Choose the verse that fits the season you are both in, rather than trying to memorize the whole list at once.

You can also share a verse with your friend in a way that is personal rather than preachy. Name why it made you think of them, or tell them what it has meant in your own life. A verse offered with humility and specific reasons usually lands far better than one offered as a correction.

A Short Prayer for Best Friends

Lord, thank you for the gift of friendship and for the people you have placed beside me. Help me to be loyal when it costs something, honest when it is hard, and gentle when I am tempted to be sharp. Show me where my friend is carrying a burden I can help lighten, and give me the courage to ask how they are truly doing. Strengthen the bond between us so that we point each other toward you. Amen.
