This list gives new fathers a set of Bible verses to read, remember and pray during the first months after a child arrives. It is written for dads who are tired, humbled and sometimes unsure of themselves. Each passage points to God as a steady presence, a source of wisdom and a help in ordinary moments of care.

Verses for the Sleepless Nights

The newborn stage brings long nights, broken sleep and a constant sense of being on duty. These verses speak to the weariness that comes with late feedings and early alarms, and they remind you that your strength is not the only thing holding your household together.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to the fatigue of working hard and still feeling short on sleep. Keep it on your phone’s lock screen, and when you are up at three in the morning, pause to receive rest as a gift rather than a failure to be productive.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes God giving power to those who are faint, which is exactly where many new fathers find themselves. Before you walk the hallway with a crying baby, ask God for the strength you do not have on your own, and let that prayer set the tone for the hour.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses speak of mercies that are new every morning, which is a comfort when yesterday’s night felt like a blur. When the sun comes up after a rough night, say the words aloud over your coffee and let them reset your expectations for the day ahead.

Verses for Learning to Father

Nobody arrives at the hospital knowing how to be a dad. The early weeks are full of small lessons in holding, feeding, changing and listening. These passages offer wisdom for the learning curve and a reminder that God is patient with beginners.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James promises wisdom to anyone who asks God for it, without holding back. Ask for it specifically before a difficult decision, such as whether the baby needs a doctor’s visit, and then notice the calm or clarity that often follows.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

This proverb speaks of training a child in the way he should go, a long-term picture that can feel distant in the newborn season. Start small by narrating your actions to your baby during bath time, and treat each small faithful act as part of that larger training.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

The psalmist celebrates how God knit each person together with care and purpose. Look at your child’s face during a quiet feeding and thank God for making this particular little life, which can turn a hard moment into a moment of wonder.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers to work at whatever they do as though serving the Lord. Apply this to the unglamorous tasks of diapers, laundry and bottle washing, and let them become acts of quiet worship rather than chores to rush through.

Verses for Fear and Uncertainty

New fathers often carry a quiet worry about their child’s health, their own competence and the future. These verses address fear directly and point to a God who is near, present and faithful in the uncertain seasons of early parenthood.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God’s words in Isaiah call his people not to fear because he is with them and will strengthen them. When a late-night worry about a fever or a breathing sound takes hold, repeat this promise slowly and then take the next practical step, such as calling the pediatric nurse line.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites believers to bring every anxious thought to God in prayer, with thanksgiving. Try turning each worry into a short specific request, then thank God for the one you have already handed over, and notice how your mind settles over time.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus offers his peace, a different kind of peace from what the world gives. Keep this verse close during the first doctor visits, and let it steady you enough to ask good questions and listen carefully to the answers.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

The psalmist names fear and then chooses to trust God in the same breath. Say this verse aloud in the car on the way home from a hard appointment, letting the honesty of “when I am afraid” meet the decision to trust.

Verses for Your Role as a Father

Your child needs more than your provision; they need your presence and your example. These verses describe the heart of a father who leads with patience, love and humility, and they can guide your choices as the years begin to unfold.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul warns fathers not to provoke their children but to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Consider one specific habit this week, such as apologizing sincerely when you lose patience, which models the grace you hope your child will one day learn.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Moses told parents to talk about God’s words throughout ordinary life, at home and on the road. Even with a newborn who cannot yet understand, you can begin by speaking a short blessing over your child during routine moments like dressing or rocking.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord requires as justice, mercy and walking humbly with God. Use this verse as a simple checklist when you face a decision about discipline or your own schedule, asking whether your choice reflects these three things.

How to Use These Verses

Write three or four of these verses on an index card and keep it in the diaper bag, on the kitchen counter or beside the changing table. A small, visible reminder is more useful at 2 a.m. than a long list stored in a notes app you rarely open.

Read one verse each morning before the day’s first demand, and return to it during the afternoon when the house feels loud. Pray the passage back to God in your own words, and let it shape the way you speak to your partner and your child as the day unfolds.

A Short Prayer for New Fathers

Lord, you know how tired I am and how little I feel I know about this new role. Thank you for the child you have placed in my care, and for the gift of being a father. Give me wisdom when I do not know what to do, patience when the night feels endless, and courage when fear rises up. Help me to be present, gentle and honest with my family, and let my love reflect your steady faithfulness. Amen.
