This prayer is for anyone who wants to lift up a church leader, whether a pastor, elder, deacon, youth director or missionary. Pray it during a quiet morning, before a Sunday service, or whenever you hear that a leader is facing a hard season. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words, adding the names and needs you know about.

Christian Prayer for a Church Leader

Lord, thank you for the men and women you have placed over your people. We ask you to surround our church leaders with your presence today. Give them wisdom when decisions are unclear, and let them hear your voice above the noise of meetings, emails and expectations. Guard their marriages and their children. Protect them from the quiet temptation to measure their worth by attendance numbers or applause.

Father, you know how heavy the work of shepherding can be. Some nights they lie awake over a family in crisis or a conflict they cannot fix. Strengthen their hearts for those burdens. Give them rest that is real, time away from screens and the phone, and friends who will ask how their soul is doing. Renew their joy in you, so that they serve out of love and not out of obligation.

We pray for their words when they speak and their courage when they must say something hard. Keep them humble, honest and gentle, and make them quick to listen. Pour out your Spirit on their preaching, teaching and prayers. Use them to build up your church in truth and mercy, and let the people they serve see your character in them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless our pastor and elders today. Give them wisdom for each decision, rest for their bodies, and peace for their hearts. Protect their families and keep them close to you. Let them feel your nearness as they lead. Strengthen them to shepherd your people with humility and love. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

Pray this verse for your leaders by asking God to help them carry the weight of their calling with joy rather than dread. Thank him for the people who keep watch over souls, and ask that the congregation would respond with gratitude and cooperation.

1 Timothy 3:1-7

1 This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. 2 The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; 3 not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; 5 (but if a man doesn’t know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the assembly of God?) 6 not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Read this passage slowly and ask God to form the character of your leaders. Pray that their lives would match their teaching, that they would be steady in their homes, and that they would be respected by people both inside and outside the church.

Ephesians 4:11-12

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…

(WEB)

Use this verse to thank God for the gifts he gives to the church through its leaders. Ask him to equip them to prepare others for service, so that the whole body grows stronger and more unified in Christ.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

When a leader feels that everything depends on them, pray this psalm. Ask the Lord to build the church himself, and to free your pastor from the pressure to hold everything together through effort alone.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

(WEB)

Pray that your church would honor and esteem its leaders in love. Ask God to soften the hearts of anyone who has been critical or unkind, and to help the congregation show appreciation through encouragement and prayer.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as early morning before the day begins or the evening before Sunday. Sit somewhere quiet, and if it helps, hold a pen and write the leader’s name at the top of a page. Some people find it helpful to pray with a hand open on the table, a small reminder that they are releasing the leader into God’s care rather than trying to fix things themselves.

Invite others to pray with you. A small group, a prayer partner or your family at dinner can each read a paragraph aloud. Consider sending a short note or text to your leader saying you prayed for them today, and name one specific thing you asked God to do.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless our leaders and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and give them peace in every season. May the people they serve be encouraged by their faithfulness, and may every one of them be strengthened to run the race with joy.
