This night prayer is for lifting a family member to God before you go to sleep. Pray it in the evening, once the house is quiet and the day’s worries start to surface, or at bedtime when you find yourself still thinking about someone you love. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the places where your heart needs to say more.

Night Prayer for a Family Member

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you the person I love most in this house, [name]. You know how they spent their hours today, the conversations that went well, the ones that did not, and the things they carried that nobody else saw. Thank you for every good moment you gave us together. Thank you for the meals we shared, the laughter that surprised us, and the small kindnesses that reminded us we are not alone.

Now I release the weight of today into your hands. Take the worry they are holding about work, money, school, or their health, and give them rest that goes deeper than sleep. Quiet the thoughts that keep them awake. Guard them through the night, and watch over them when I cannot. Surround their sleep with your peace, and let them wake refreshed and ready to receive whatever the morning brings.

Father, hold them close, and hold me as I pray. Keep us all in your care, and remind us that you do not sleep and you do not forget. We trust you with the night. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, [name] is resting now, and I ask you to keep them safe while they sleep. Calm their mind, ease whatever aches or worries them, and let them wake to a new day held in your hands. Thank you for loving them more than I ever could. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Read this verse slowly over your family member and let it become a statement of trust. Pray that they would lie down with the same confidence, believing that God keeps them even when they cannot keep watch themselves.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

This passage reminds us that the Lord never grows drowsy over the people we love. Pray that your family member would feel the steady presence of a God who is always awake on their behalf.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

When your loved one is anxious about everything they have not finished, this verse offers a gentle correction. Ask God to teach them that rest is a gift he gives to those he loves.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him, and that invitation includes the person you are praying for tonight. Pray that they would hear this call clearly and bring their exhaustion to him before closing their eyes.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul describes a peace that guards the heart and mind. Pray that this peace would stand watch over your family member’s thoughts as they move from the busyness of the day into sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time just before bed when the lights are dimmed and phones are set aside. You might sit on the edge of their bed, stand in the doorway, or kneel beside your own bed with your hands open in your lap. Holding something small, like a cup of tea or the edge of a blanket, can help you stay focused on the people you are praying for rather than the list of tasks still waiting.

If other family members or friends want to join you, invite them to pray one line each, passing the prayer around the room. You could also write the person’s name on a card and place it on your nightstand as a reminder to lift them up each evening until you see the answers you have been hoping for.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never slumbers keep [name] safe through this night and every night ahead. May his peace settle over them like a warm blanket, and may they wake knowing they were loved and held. The Lord bless them and keep them, and make his face shine on them.
