This evening prayer is for the moment you want to place someone you love into God’s hands before the day ends. Pray it at bedtime, at the kitchen table after everyone has gone quiet, or in the car on the way home when you realize you have not thought of them since morning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the people on your heart.

Evening Prayer for a Loved One

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you the one I love. You know where they went today, what they carried, and what they were too tired to say out loud. You know the conversation that went badly, the test result they are waiting on, the bill that arrived too early, and the quiet worry they did not want to share with anyone. Take all of it from them now. Let the weight they have been holding slide off their shoulders and rest with you, because you are the one who does not sleep and does not grow weary.

Watch over them through the dark hours. Guard their sleep and keep away the fears that come up in the middle of the night when nothing looks clear. If they lie awake, be near them. If they dream, let the dreams be gentle. Protect their body from harm and their heart from despair. Remind them, when they wake, that they were never alone in the night. Thank you for the good parts of their day, for the laugh they shared, the meal they enjoyed, and the small kindness someone showed them. Help them remember those gifts, and help me remember to thank you for them too. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you are awake while I sleep, and you know the one I love tonight. Hold them close and calm their mind. Guard them from fear and from harm, and let them rest in your care until morning. Thank you for today and for the gift of them in my life. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this over your loved one as a declaration of trust. Ask God to let them lie down and sleep because their safety rests in his keeping, not in their own vigilance.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to keep watch over your loved one through the night. Name their specific situation and remind yourself that the one who guards Israel does not doze off.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this for the loved one who cannot stop worrying long enough to rest. Ask God to give them the sleep he offers to those he loves, so that they can release the day’s striving.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the weariness your loved one feels to Jesus in prayer. Invite them, in your own words, to set down what they are carrying and come to him at the end of the day.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray that your loved one would bring their anxieties to God instead of replaying them at night. Ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind to settle over them as they fall asleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment in your evening, such as after you turn off the lights or just before you brush your teeth, so the prayer becomes a habit rather than an afterthought. If you live with your loved one, you might pray it in the room where they sleep, standing at the doorway or sitting on the edge of the bed. If you are apart, hold a photo or a small object that reminds you of them, or simply keep their name on a card beside your bed so your hands have something to rest on while you pray.

You might also ask someone else to pray this prayer alongside you, a spouse, a friend, or a member of your church family who knows your loved one. Let them say the words over the person you both care about while you listen, or pray the shorter version back and forth. Sharing the burden often makes the night feel less heavy, and it reminds you that the people you love are held up by more than one set of hands.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord watch over you and over the one you love as the night settles in. May he give rest to your weary heart and quiet to your restless mind. May his peace guard you both until the morning light comes.
