This bedtime prayer is for the end of a day when you want to set down what went wrong, thank God for what went right, and ask for a quiet night. Pray it as you lie down, in a chair before the lights go out, or beside a child’s bed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries and thanks into the open spaces.
Bedtime Prayer for a Peaceful Day
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to You as it is. Some of it went well, and I thank You for those moments: the kind word, the finished task, the meal shared at the table. Some of it did not go well. I snapped at someone I love. I carried a worry into every hour and never quite put it down. I ask You to take the hard parts now and to forgive me where I was careless, impatient or afraid.
Quiet my mind, which keeps replaying conversations and listing tomorrow’s demands. Settle the tight place in my chest. Be with the people I am anxious about, the ones who are sick, the ones who are far away, the ones who are struggling in ways I cannot fix. Let them rest in You tonight as much as I want to rest in You.
Guard this house while we sleep. Keep the doors locked and the children safe, and keep our hearts from fear in the dark. Wake me gently in the morning, and give me enough grace for the new day. I trust You with what I could not finish, and with what I could not control. Hold me until I sleep. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am tired and my thoughts are noisy. Take the day from my hands. Thank You for the good in it, forgive me for the failures, and settle my heart now. Watch over my family and over me while I sleep. Give me rest that is real and not only the absence of work. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse slowly, letting each phrase settle before the next. It is David’s own confession of trust, and you can make it yours by naming the specific places where you feel exposed tonight.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Use this verse to lay down the habit of working late into the night as if everything depends on you. Ask God to teach you to rest without guilt, because He is able to care for what you cannot finish.
Psalm 3:5
I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.
(WEB)
Read this as a testimony of waking. Thank God for each morning you have been given, and ask Him to keep the same steady presence with you through the hours you spend asleep.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Bring the weight you are carrying to Jesus in plain words. Name the burdens one by one, then ask Him to give you the rest He offers rather than the rest you try to manufacture yourself.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Use this passage to turn each worry into a request. Name the anxieties that keep you awake, then ask God for the peace that guards the heart and mind, trusting that He hears even what you cannot yet put into words.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it in the last few minutes before you turn off the light, in the same spot each night if you can. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand by the window. A simple habit helps: keep a pen by the bed and write down the one thing you are handing to God so that you can see the day’s weight leave the page.
If you share a home, invite a spouse, a roommate or a child to pray the prayer with you, taking turns with the lines. A parent can read it over a sleeping child, adding their name and a specific worry for the next day. Praying together turns a private settling into a shared peace.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over His people be with you tonight and give you rest that reaches the heart. May the day’s burdens be set down in His hands, and may you wake in the morning ready to receive what He gives.
